When will the software work properly with strict mode? Failing to work correctly in strict mode presents other obstacles and suggests that you would support bad programming practice.

There is no public date on when/if EE will support strict mode.  As Derek notes, the current requirement is consistent with the vast majority of professionally hosted setups.

But shifting to general discussion for, well, discussion.

For what it’s worth, we’ve yet to find a non-Windows professionally managed server in the wild running MySQL in strict mode.
