Simple question regarding the installation of EE on a site that hasn’t been configured with a domain name.  I can access my server at an IP address and was wondering if I could install EE on it without having the domain name setup.  I’m building a site for a client who has an existing site with another host and I don’t want to move their existing site to the new host.  I’d like to install and configure EE on their new server and do a switch when it’s ready.  How will the IP address affect the database settings?  Does it even matter?  Thanks!

Yes, it’s certainly possible to use an IP address instead of a domain name. Once you’re ready to move, this article might help. Let us know if you run into any trouble.
