I just purchased Forums and am doing a first time install. I’m running ExpressionEngine 1.6.4 - Build: 20080808 and Discussion Forum 2.1.0.

After following the ‘Installing the Discussion Forum Module’ and ‘Setting Up Your Forums’ sections in the docs, I started clicking around to get the ‘lay-of-the-land’ and find that when I’m in Forum Board Home, and click on ‘Templates’ I this this error message:

Unable to locate the specified templates

And when I click on “Visit Forums”  I get this error message:

Unable to locate the forum theme folder.

Can you help me get back on track?

Thanks.

The forum install as a folder called forum_themes. That folder needs to be uploaded to your /themes directory.

Does that help?

The forum install as a folder called forum_themes. That folder needs to be uploaded to your /themes directory.

Does that help?

Step 3
Inside the unzipped software, you will find a forum_themes directory. Upload this directory and everything inside it to your server and place it in the themes directory. You should end up with it located at themes/forum_themes/.

This is where I have it in my system folder ... /themes/forum_themes/

Yes, that should be good. Permissions are fine?

Did you ever run into trouble with the control panel themes and have to shift things around to get them working?  I suspect not.  In which case, my first bet would be file corruption in transfer.  I’d grab a fresh download, open it up, delete the current forum_themes folder and upload a fresh copy.  Let’s see if that helps.

It turns out that my problem stemmed from having the forum_themes folder installed at ... /system/themes instead of /public_html/themes/. By putting forum_themes in public_html/themes it works.

So what’s the difference between the themes folder under ‘public_html’ and the one under ‘system’?

Thanks.

EE does not create a /system/themes folder, so perhaps you just put it there by mistake? I know I have on occasion.

Ohhhh .... as the light goes on ... and I view my somewhat embarrassed face in the mirror ... the system/theme folder is a relic from when I first installed ee years ago—when I had absolutely no idea about what I was doing ... and it explains why I’ve been ‘stuck’ with the classic control panel theme since the update.

So ... is updating my themes folder as simple as dragging the contents of the 1.6.4 version into /themes? Or will that create problems?

Thanks.

Unless you have customized your CP themes, that should work fine, yes. Well, backup those files just to be on the safe side smile
