In the installation documentation it says:

If you are using a Unix server (or Unix variant, like Linux, OS X, FreeBSD, etc.) you must set the following files to 666:
path.php
system/config.php
system/config_bak.php
You must set the following directories to 777:
images/avatars/uploads/
images/captchas/
images/member_photos/
images/pm_attachments/
images/signature_attachments/
images/uploads/
system/cache/

How is this done? I have all my files uploaded, but don’t know how to change this or if I really need to change anything?

Thanks a lot for any help with this!

There are a number of ways to achieve that; usually you’d use your FTP program to do it. Try the context menu, ie right-click on the file / directory, there should be “Permissions” or something similar. 666 means read + write for permissions for “user”, “group” and “world”, 777 means right, write and execute permissions. You might want to talk to your host about it.
