Phpmydirectory & EE Integration

Currently we are using phpmydirectory software and are contemplating on purchasing EE for the Forum & Blogs section. We want to know if we can have a single sign-on for both these software. Hence when a user registers on our site the details are stored in the phpmydirectory database. On going to the forum page the user is automatically is logged in EE.
There might be 2 ways of doing this
1) Disabling EE member database and using only phpmydirectory member database.
2) When user registers in phpmydirectory, automatically information is replicated and saved in EE member database.

Kindly help as this is critical.

Thank you.

There is no built-in functionality to allow for such single sign-ons. Not being familiar with phpmydirectory, I think it will probably be possible, but will certainly require custom coding. As to EE, there are a few hooks in place, so an extension might be all that’s needed, but this functionality does not come out of the box.

Thanks Ingmar.
Can you give me links to documents on EE website which have integration techniques between EE & third party software specific to Member database. Maybe I can have a look and find out the feasibility.
Also can we edit the code of EE i.e. are the php pages modifiable? and upto what extent.

Thanks again.

The EE docs can be found here. I don’t think anything specific to integrating logins has been published, so I would start with a search on these forums.

When you buy an EE license, you get access to all of the source code, regular, unobfuscated, unencrypted PHP, and the right to modify it for your own purposes (although we ask you not to distribute such modifications). Given EE’s extensive add-on capabilities this might not be necessary, however: often a custom module or extension is the better choice, maintaining upward compatibility.
