I am in the process of setting up a gallery page for a client so that she can finally manage her images herself. Problem is the gallery I’m creating doesn’t seem to work with the Expression Engine set up. Is there anyway to build a gallery like that on the press section of this site - http://www.rebeccaminkoff.com/site.html (I know this is in flash but I will be building it in Javascript instead. Click on PRESS in the main nav to view) and still make it manageable via the CMS itself rather than just dumping the HTML into a template as is? I’m trying out the 30 day trial but this issue might make or break my decision to purchase for this client.

Thanks!

(My idea was to maybe make each column a separate weblog and relate them somehow? Possible?)

Just to clarify a few things:

You intend to have a photo gallery that should have the following attributes:
1) Photos can be added through the CMS
2) The Navigation should be built dynamically
3) Photos are divided into groups by Year, Month and entry

I am assuming some additional not stated requirements.

4) Each entry consists of a photo and a subtitle

I would go about this in the following way:
1) Create a weblog called Images
2) Create categories as needed (i.e Press, Girls etc.)
3) You only need three custom fields here (two if you use the title as caption) which are: title (mandatory), ImageUrl, ImageCaption
4) Output images just like you would for a blog. Per Year or Month, you don’t need a single entry view since you just display it on the month level using javascript.

You can use the normal upload process to upload images or you can use the EE gallery and relate an image to a entry. Both ways would work.

PS: You don’t need to think in columns and relating them EE does that. Just output the first column with “dynamic=off” and only output years. While the second column is uses the dynamic URL to decide which month was clicked.

As the thumb image is a cropped version of the large image (rather than simply being resized), you’ll probably find using a weblog with custom fields better than using the gallery. I’d use Mark Huot’s file extension and create separate custom fields for the main image and then thumb.
