I’ve got a client who is already tied into “Sage” as an online payment gateway.  They want to use the simple commerce module and I notice it’s already uniquely tied to Paypal.  Is it difficult to mod the module to be able to work with another provider?

Simple answer: No, it cannot. You might be able to rewrite it to some point, but at this point it might be easier to simply implement a different solution.

The only one I could give you, I am afraid. The SCM is exactly that: simple. There is a more robust and full-fledged ecommerce module in the works, but EE 2.0 will come before that.
