Hi there,

Just a quickie this. I took the long awaited plunge (after checking that most of my programmes would work on Leopard) and upgraded my MacBook Pro to Leopard.

Just wondering if anyone else has done so and is now experiencing a large amount of fan noise. My fan doesn’t seem to want to turn off now at all!!

Is Leopard really that more processor intensive, I am guessing not?

Thanks for any insight on this. I am wondering if I need a Firmware update or something to fix this?

About the only time my fans (MacBookPro-17) run up is when securely deleting a lot of files.

Edit-Add: Should add that I’ve installed every Apple update.

I’m thinking of wiping the whole computer and starting again. No mean feat as I have a LOT of files on there but they are all already backed up. It’s just the re-installation of all the programmes and their associated plugins that I want to avoid if at all possible. Looks like I might do this though if I can’t get it figured out soon. Can never harm to have the computer running to its most tip-top condition I suppose

I had loads of problems with my MacBook when I first got it and won’t go into those here but sufficed to say I got quite a bit of money knocked off the price and also a free RAM upgrade and a couple of other items too.

I think I will just wipe and start again. Will probably find a load of things that I don’t need any more which will speed everything up too!

Mark I was having the same problem with my Macbook.

Are you getting consistently high CPU temps? Fan noise? CPU Usage?

Hmm maybe. I literally only just installed Leopard and as soon as it restarted the fan was on constantly. I am definitely now thinking of starting again as I have tested out so many pieces of software and installed and deleted items since I got the computer that this is probably the best and safest bet I reckon.

I think I will just wipe and start again

Did that to a friends MBP a few months ago and found the easiest way was to first use SuperDuper to make a clone, wipe the drive, install OSX, install all the latest updates, then use the Migration Assistant to restore programs/files from the SuperDuper clone. As I recall, it lets you pick-n-choose what to restore. Saved a ton of time over manually installing all the programs, setting prefs, etc.

Never trusted those myself. I’m pretty old school when it comes to Macs I’m afraid!!

Just too many dependent files that these kinds of programmes could miss for me. I’m not too bothered about re-installing everything as I pretty much have my tool-set down nowadays so will just resist the urge to try out every single new piece of software from now on

Check that it is not just Spotlight re-indexing your hardrive(s). I seem to recall that mine reindexed everything when I upgraded [EDIT: and made the MBP fans go crazy].

That’s what I love about these forums. People thinking up and offering different ideas and suggestions. Unfortunately not that either I’m afraid as I have completely disabled Spotlight indexing as I never use it.

I’m just going to go ahead and re-install. Will be nice to have a completely clean computer and gives me a chance to get rid of everything that is clogging up the system

How old is the hard drive? Perhas install of OS hit the bad sector of the HD which can be crutial and can not be re-indexed; making your HD spin (re-read) more and cause for more heat triggering fans to kick in.
If you are going through the trouble of cloning or re-install I would invest into a new HD since they are cheap.

Right then a quick update for you!

I found out using Activity Monitor that there was a process for the IPSecuritas programme that I had tried out yonks ago was constantly using up 92% of the CPU!!!

Quit that blighter right away as I don’t even use that programme, was just testing it out! I swear when I have sorted the Activity Monitor by CPU usage it has never shown up before though. Such a large number usage would have been fairly obvious! Not too sure where that was hiding.

I am now listening to the sound of…

… well nothing!!

I’m still going to wipe the drive and start again though as I have tried out SOOOO many programmes over the past year or so that I have probably done other things silly to the computer also.

Will report back when I am all done.

Thanks lebisol for the thought there. I know that the drive doesn’t have any bad sectors though so probably won’t do that but will keep it in mind for the future.

Wish me luck with the change!! Will probably wait until the weekend to do all of that though.

Sorry to bring this thread back up again guys but was just wondering what is the largest / cheapest HD available for a Macbook Pro 17” 2.16GHZ computer. I’d like to get the largest drive possible but also the cheapest. When I say cheapest I don’t meant that I want a 300TB (I know they don’t exist ) drive yet it only costs £1 as that would most definitely fail but something which is a good throw off between the two of size and cost.

Any information anyone has would be great, thanks. Also I’m in the UK so would prefer to get something delivered from a company in this country as I have never really trusted hard-drives that are shipped from other countries due to what they are put through getting across the water!

As for which drives to buy, I swear by (and rarely at) Seagate Momentus drives, though Apple tends to use Western Digital drives.
