Its that time again, were I think I would be moving my sites to a new VPS provider (good companies are hard to come by )

So any of you have VPS?  What company do you use? How do they work with your EE sites?

You are going to get a different answer with every post and nobody will have a reason for one being any better than the other.

So rather than post the VPS provider I use, I will post a good location to search reviews.

I’m sure there are lots of great places to have a VPS. I can only recommend the one I use because that’s where my experience is:  Slicehost.

I been to webhostingtalk already, but thanks for suggesting it!

What I want is a lot of opinions to see so I can start focusing my search on VPS that work well with EE.

Heh, OK, I will crack.  I use Slicehost too.

Edit:  Fixed broken English.

Edit: Edit:  Slicehost is unmanaged though.  If EE runs bad on it, then it is your fault.  wink

I have a client on ServInt. Been running like buttah since last November. Their service is very good too…although I did NOT know about this Slicehost of which you speak. Hmmmm, nice pricing options.

Good point, John. Slicehost is not for the faint of heart. Each slice comes with just the operating system, no Apache, no PHP, no MySQL. And definitely no control panel (like Plesk).

I’m using ServInt’s VPS. After 3 months, I can say they’re the best to deal with. The speed is amazing, no downtime, all my support ticket were answered within less than 20 minutes.

That is probably the biggest difference between ServInt and Slicehost.  With Slicehost, no downtime generally means you don’t open tickets.  That is why their prices are so much lower.

From ServInt’s website…

You deserve the ServInt SuperVPS. It’s the more reliable, more powerful alternative to an entry-level managed Dedicated Server. It’s a fully-redundant, Enterprise-class hosting solution with ample resources and an easy upgrade path. The ServInt SuperVPS is changing the way people think about managed hosting. It’s the Virtual Private Server (VPS) concept, all grown up, and it’s available today.

So Servint is managed and Slicehost is not.  The “managed” is what makes the difference in price.

If you need managed, Servint would be the better option because this is not an available option with Slicehost.

Edit: Servint explains exactly what “managed” means here.  Honestly, if you are not experienced with administering a server then the premium is probably well worth it.

Absolutely agreed!

Simplehost.co.nz are great. They put together a very reasonable plan for my client’s part PHP, part Ruby server (http://wapid.co.nz/) and have been extremely responsive to support emails. I highly recommend them. Even though they’re a New Zealand company, I’m pretty sure their data center is in California.

one thing to consider. Take what you get from WHT (web hosting talk) for what it’s worth. There is a very big Bias there, and a vast majority of the people that ‘recommend’ things are more so bandwagon jumpers than techs.

You can get great information there, you just have to really watch who you’re paying attention to

I started out with SliceHost but it was a bit “too raw” for our needs.  We moved over to WiredTree.com and it’s been great.  Even includes phone support which is nice.

A plug for JaguarPC for our vps needs. We recently moved from a dedicated server at Layeredtech.com to a VPS solution at Jaguar and it’s been rock solid so far (3-4 months in).

I have been using WebHSP for the past 10 years and the team there have always been great. There are plenty of options to choose from but I have a Cpanel VPS account which gives me huge amounts of flexibility at a very reasonable price.
