Weird problem.

I was logged in to a EE site back end and created a new user and user group so a client can do their own entries. I logged in as the user using the control panel function to test their privileges - everything was OK. I logged out. I then tried to log back in and just get redirected to the log in screen every time.

I have tried:

1) Clearing my cache.
2) Clearing my cookies for that site.
3) Clearing my stored passwords in FF.

Nothing seems to help. I can login using my account using IE (YUCK!) but not Firefox.

Anybody know what’s up?

Do you have the cookie domain value set correctly?

You can see this setting here: CP Home › Admin › System Preferences › Cookie Settings

Usually a value of “.example.com” (replacing ‘example’, duh!) is suffice, though it may or may not need the “.” at the beginning.

I suspect some cookie action as well.  Via IE, go to ‘Admin- System Prefs- Security’ and flip admin to use sessions only.  Then double check the cookie domain settings per the_butcher’s advice above.

Should be able to login via FF now- and let me know if you set a cookie domain/tweaked one.  If so, I suspect you could flip it back to cookies and be ok.

Let us know how that approach goes.

The problem resolved in the following way.

cleared everything out (cookies, cache, and stored passwords) and closed the browser down. I then restarted the browser ans checked fro stored cookies. I found two more cookies from the site. Both times I cleared the cookies using the same search string and I even looked manually for the cookies.

I did check the cookies setting and it was empty. I will be smart and set it properly.

Anyway, I am eying a FF bug or server reset?

Not sure if it was an FF bug- but yep, it sounds like it wasn’t finding those cookies to delete- but EE was and thus jamming things up.  I believe having the cookie domain set should prevent it happening in the future.

I’m going to leave this one open for now.  If you get the urge- might want to replicate the steps that jammed you up the first time- make sure there is no ‘jamming’ now that you’ve got the cookie domain set.  I think you’ll be ok.  But if not?  We’ll dig deeper.

Make sense?
