Lowest necessary permissions on files and directories?

Can someone point me to a reference concerning the lowest necessary file/directory permissions EE can support without breaking?

Also, does a script exist that can traverse my EE install and check that file/directory permissions are satisfactory and won’t break EE or any active Module/Extension?
