Dear EE Members,

I had a quick question in regards to the Stand-Alone “Edit” Form.. A friend of mine had just proposed me to do a site for him and while his budget isn’t too great, I want to do it the best that I can as I’ve known for him for years and understand his passion for his work (art).

The plan was to make an online community similar to Deviant Art. I know most of the functions can be done with the modules and with the core EE itself, but a few things are bothering me.

Mostly, SAEF issues, both really, the Entry and Edit variations. Ideally, for the site, I’d like it for members of the site to be able to delete, edit/modify their previous entries. Does the ability of the Stand-Alone “Edit” Form allow one to do so without limitations? I’ve been reading on and off of the complications in regards to using both the Entry and Edit forms, so was wondering if anybody else had previously implemented Edit forms to great success? There would be a slew of custom fields, and what I really want is some type of AJAX image previewing on the Entry Form.. But that’s an entire separate issue.

From the sounds of what my friend wants to do with the site, it would be a rather large undertaking. He’s willing to sell his old car to pay for advertising, so I can only assume he is serious about this.

Any thoughts or input appreciated.

P.S. Does anybody have or know of a site done in EE that implements the “Edit” and “Entry” forms so I play around with them?

I do it all the time. The trick with the preview and editing is you have to use field id’s when referencing the custom field. Here are two scripts that should get you started. One is an example and the other is template that renders a convenient list of all your field ids. Just copy and past the dev-fields one into a template on your site and view it.

Great stuff.. Just so we’re clear, this means that users would be able to edit their previous entries with ease? :D I’m relatively new to ExpressionEngine, and am liking it more every minute.. The community here simply rocks.

mr_dimsum, welcome to the forums!

To answer your question, Yes. I think the example I gave you provides every type of form element you should need. You may have to play with the php code depending on your content. Also don’t forget to make the form template PHP enabled. I would send you a example link but everything requires logins etc…

Your right the community here does rock. It was only from the help from the folks here that I was able to figure all that out. I am glad I could pass it on. It’s a bit tricky at first but once you break it down it makes sense.

Mike

Hi Mr. Hahn,
Thanks for posting this.
Any chance you could explain how to filter (perhaps pass url parameter?) for a participial weblog entry before the values are loaded into form fields?
In other words, if users has 2 entries in a weblog what is the trigger that determines which entry is being edited?

Many thanks!

I might not understand your question, but I believe that the weblog module handles that or you can use the url_segment. But maybe some others would have a better explanation.

Sorry I wasn’t much help.

Thanks for the reply,
I am still new to SAEF so perhaps premature question. No worries, this is a great start I will adopt the code to my setup and see how far it goes. Thanks for the follow up.

No love on this one, it seems that this is just an alternative to SAEF Entry form since I can not find a mechanism to specify which entry to edit. It seems as most people are using “Form Helper” -> forum thread
Anyhow, thanks for the attention.
