It’s with some sadness that I announce today that Paul Burdick is stepping down from his position as Chief Technology Officer, a role he has held for over four years, in order to pursue some personal goals.  Although Paul will continue with us in a reduced capacity, he is being replaced as CTO by Derek Jones.

They say that in life, timing is everything.  In 2003, fresh out of college, Paul was hired by the Oregon Wine Board to build a website using our first generation publishing system, pMachine Pro.  That site had a number of needs that were not able to be met natively by pM Pro, so Paul, despite never having coded anything in PHP before, rolled up his sleeves and figured out how to develop those features.  He then generously donated his new code back to our community, which is how I first met him.

I remember looking at his code and being blown away that he had only been coding a few weeks.  He was a natural.  He also happened to live in the same city as I did, and as luck would have it, my little company had grown to the point of needing some development help, so I offered him a job.  Paul became employee number three.  There was me, a guy named Chris doing tech support (who left the company years ago), and Paul.

At the time Paul came on-board, I was a few months away from unveiling ExpressionEngine, the secret new project I had been working on.  In order to stay focussed on EE, I turned pMachine’s development over to Paul; a risky move for sure, given how little experience he had.  To Paul’s credit, he took the challenge by the horns, dove head first into the code, and single-handedly developed the very next release of pM Pro.  A natural indeed.

As good as Paul’s technical skills would become, his work ethic and commitment were even more impressive.  Paul immediately became my trusted right-hand man, and for the past four years has been an integral component to our success.  During those early years in particular, Paul was more like a brother than an employee.  I can’t express how grateful I am that Paul emerged in our forums one day, and helped shape who we are today.  I couldn’t have done it without his help.

A couple years ago, we had a similar good fortune in finding Derek Jones.  He had been participating in our forums, having built a couple projects using our software.  We needed to grow our team just as Derek’s career was transitioning, so we offered him a job.  Similar to Paul, Derek was very new to programming when he started, but he had that special mojo that enabled him to learn rapidly and get productive very quickly.  In less then two years Derek has gone from having little programming experience to becoming CTO of our company.  Impressive.

Paul, and later Derek, taught me my philosophy on hiring:  Hire people who are brilliant, who get things done, and who show great aptitude—and this is important—even if they don’t have a particular skill-set.  Skills can be learned.  The other stuff can’t.

So today marks a day of transition.  Paul Burdick is leaving to spread his wings, tackle some new challenges, and meet some personal goals.  And Derek Jones is emerging as the cornerstone of our technical team.  Paul leaves a big void to fill, but fortunately we’ve had some months to make the transition internally, and he will still be with us in a reduced role, so our development goals shouldn’t be affected.

Thank you for all you’ve done for us, Paul.  You’ll be missed!

Paul, your presence in the community, and your (and, of course, Rick’s) commitment to ExpressionEngine and its future was one of the major draws for me as an end-user.  I wouldn’t be here now if not for you.  Good luck with whatever challenges you seek out next.

And Derek - congratulations.  Hard to believe that helpful Nafai guy is now CTO - and with such rapidity.

Here’s to Paul!

He went from the guy Rick hired before me, to a friend that started my daughter’s library. I think that about sums it up. Though I will miss tackling the professional challenges that are the every day life at EllisLab with you, I’m sure there are many more books that my daughter will want.

Cheers!

ps - Jones… did Paul teach you the secret CTO handshake?

@Paul - my sadness over your departure is balanced by the fact that it is only the professional aspect that is ending.  I’m sure we’ll still be IMing each other when you are Dictator For Life of a small wealthy island nation.  Happy travels, old man!

@Lisa - thank you!  As you well know, Rick is the type of employer who rewards hard work.  It’s been a definitely pleasure being part of the EllisLab family, and I’m ecstatic to be able to continue that relationship in my new role.

Yes, though as my first act as CTO, it has been changed to a secret CTO dance!

That’s big news! Looks like Ellislab is changing quite a bit on the HR side.
I’m glad to see Derek is stepping up though, that’s great.

All the best.

@Paul: Thanks for all the work done in the last years to make EE thus an excellent product. Of course, at some times changes are necessary, especially if they are driven by personal visions. I certainly will miss our discussions, but I hope you’ll not be away completely from the forums. All the best, Paul!

@Derek: Congrats for the promotion. It’s good to know that there is consistency in development of EE 2.0 guaranteed ... and definitely you’re the right one for the job.

And setting the record for the least time spent as my boss...it’s Paul Burdick! wink

I’ll re-state what I’ve already said:  Just about every bit of success I’ve had since leaving the corporate world and starting a business 6 years ago can be directly attributed to using the products you’ve spent so much effort on.  Mere “thanks” hardly seem enough, really, but thanks again and if your travels take you through West Michigan let me know—drinks and dinner are on me.

And Congrats to D.Jones - a worthy successor if ever there were one!

@Paul – thank you for all the updated files you would email me late at night back when I was stumbling around with pMachine Pro. Thank you for answering 100’s of my support requests and many hours trying to guide me in the right direction as I learned web development and pM and then EE in the community forums. Thank you for inspiring me in my new career. And remember. . . . you can run, but you can’t hide. We’ll expect to see you popping into the forums from time to time.

@Dude! - er. . . um, Mr. CTO, Derek Sir. Sincere congratulations! Say does that CTO dance happen to involve a spinner and a mat with colored dots by any chance?

Paul!  I thought you liked having CTO next to your name.  I mean, being CTO is better than being CFU, right?  Congrats to Derek.

Paul, thanks so much for everything you’ve put into our favorite CMS company. Without you, I’m sure it’d never be the same (but still equally amazing). Wish you all the best in your Monty Python watching and world domination planning.

And now it can be Chief Derek, and Other Derek.

Best wishes Paul, I suppose this will give you more time for the Monty Python re-runs and a chance to brush up on that Scottish accent?

Here’s to your continued success!

Wow, thanks so much Paul for your *massive* contribution over the years to what a lot of us use and enjoy day in and day out to earn a crust. You’ve obviously been a huge part of pM/EL and will be missed, but all the best with your future endeavors, including a nice long break in the short term from the sounds of things, sounds great! :)

Congrats to Mr Jones too, let the reign of Derek begin! :D

Paul, what can I say.  You and I joined the pMachine community days apart that August so long ago.  Have really enjoyed IMing, and working with you on projects, and meeting in person a few times over the years, and looking forward to seeing what new things live brings you.  I am saddened on one hand to have a fellow CTO in arm moving on, but from the sound of it you have some plans for some grand new adventures around the corner too!

Derek, Welcome to the CTO club!

Paul, best of fortune, and may your dreams turn into something you really like.  Said of experience wink.

Derek, you’ve shown your sharp chops around here, and am sure you will be a good man in this job.  Congratulations on the new responsibility.

Regards to both,
Clive
