Trouble with updating

This question may be related to a resolved thread.

In the top left of the control panel it reads “v 1.6.0”, though in config.php the app_version says 163. I tried updating a while and something timed out or went wrong, it used to read “v 1.6.2” in he control panel. Then when I botched the update it went down to 1.6.0.
Now I’m having trouble with Forum attachments and I want to update everything to see if that fixes the Forum problem I’m having.

When I try to update, it says I have to update to 1.6.1 first, and then gives me this error:
“Description: Duplicate column name ‘ip_address’ ”

Could you guide me in what step I should take next?

Upload the latest files for both EE and the forum, than run update.php. If you get an error message, post it here in full.

Everything will be good in the end. If it’s not good, it’s not the end.

Thanks Ingmar,
I followed the steps to update the forum and everything seemed to work. But I still get this error when I try to update the version of Expression Engine:

MySQL ERROR:
Error Number: 1060
Description: Duplicate column name ‘ip_address’
Query: ALTER TABLE `exp_mailing_list` ADD `ip_address` VARCHAR(16) NOT NULL AFTER `list_id`

Hi, doublepd.

The alter table query for ip_address has already taken place, which is why you’re seeing that error.

If you could, make a backup copy of your config.php file, and edit it to have

$conf['app_version'] = "161";

in it.

That will set you back to 1.6.1 (making sure your config.php file writable.) and rerun update.php.

Thanks Sue,
I changed the config.php from “163” to “161”. Then when I go to update.php, the update link reads:
“Update from Version 1.6 to Version 1.6.1”

After I click that I get the same error:

MySQL ERROR:
Error Number: 1060
Description: Duplicate column name ‘ip_address’
Query: ALTER TABLE `exp_mailing_list` ADD `ip_address` VARCHAR(16) NOT NULL AFTER `list_id`

I now how to cheat the system…

Make a backup copy of your ud_161.php file.

Take your copy of ud_162.php and use that for ud_161.php.

EE should *see* ud_161 as needing no database changes, and go to ud_162 and then to ud_163.

Make sense?

Awesome, cheating is fun.
I did what you said and it worked for the first part, then it said something like “Click below to install the next step” so I clicked it, and it gave me the same error:

MySQL ERROR:
Error Number: 1060
Description: Duplicate column name ‘ip_address’
Query: ALTER TABLE `exp_mailing_list` ADD `ip_address` VARCHAR(16) NOT NULL AFTER `list_id`

Now when I go to the update.php screen, the link reads:
“Update from Version 1.6.1 to Version 1.6.1”

There’s something else going on here..

How much actual content do you have on the site?

Hi, doubledpd - before we continue troubleshooting this, can you please try a full refresh of your ExpressionEngine files, in your /system/ directory. Make sure it is from a fresh download of ExpressionEngine.  Just ensure you don’t overwrite config.php.

As a further note, after a nice long sleep - if config.php was saying 1.6.3, then that indicates that all of the database updates did, indeed, occur and you had a successful update.  At this point the best thing to do is get those files freshly uploaded, closely following the update instructions for that, to ensure you have the absolute newest versions on your server.

Phew, OK!

Everything worked and I’m at Expression Engine v 1.6.3 AND Forum 2.1.0. Thank you for your help.

Now I’m off to the tech support thread to get that under control.
