Calling all Mac users here… I teach a local mac class and the last class is on “Mac Resources”. So I’m asking for some help with finding some quality mac resources to help them continue learning about their computer, the os, and their software. What’s helped you? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Hi there,

Sounds really interesting this one although I’m not sure how I can help with this one as I have been using Macs ever since they first came out so have never really had any resources myself and have just got on with it really. I never ever read manuals but that’s the way I like to work. Just like to delve right in there and as it’s a Mac I can usually figure it all out for myself anyway. If not there’s always forums or posts on forums where someone has always had the same problem before you have wink

Sorry that I can’t be of any more help on this one but as the Mac (I think) is such an easy computer system to use I wouldn’t even know where to look myself.

If I do think of anything though then I will post back. Hope the class all goes well.

Best wishes,

Mark

I’ve actually found learning Linux quite good for understanding how Macs work. As they are based on FreeBSD you can become a command line genius by picking up a bit of Linux and applying it to your Mac.

In terms of Mac 101 I think there are quite a few books out there catering for that, other than that the Apple site has a huge number of resources.

But I suppose you know about that if you are lecturing on it wink

Any particular type of resource you are looking for?

Find Out How

Switch 101

Mac 101

The iFixIt Guides are wonderful (used them to switch out HDs in my MBP and iBook).

And, of course, Daring Fireball

Off the top of my head, I’d recommend Mac OSX Hints and a subscription to Macworld magazine (you can get a year for around $28 here). Lots of good advice and tips between the two.

Hey some great links! Keep em coming boys… smile

I’m looking for anything you’ve found useful. Something that new Mac users can use to continue learning.

Well I suppose the only thing I ever really have is a subscription to MacFormat. Anything technical I have picked up through the years from using Macs ever since they came out. MacFormat is pretty well written though and usually has lots of good content although nowadays I think their proof-readers seem to have gone asleep and also their spell-checker doesn’t seem to work so well wink

@Erin - Nice link… another great resource. Thanks!

@Mark - Yeah I like MacFormat too. If I remember back when I used to get those it was like 14.95 on the book shelves. Or maybe I’m thinking of another magazine.

Like George said, I think the most overlooked fact about OS X is it’s UNIX roots. Linux.org or any linux/unix resources can be very helpful on every level. From troubleshooting and file manipulation to running programs and server settings. Learn how to run apache, mySQL, build a PHP module, configure sendmail. Build your own custom bash commands or dive into permissions.

Basically learn where Bill Gates gets all his ideas. Like the news I heard the other day - Microsofts Super Shell!

Go to the source.

Apple support includes loads of tutorials and discussions.

I also like Apple pro-tips.
