Hello,
I am trying to install Expression Engine for the first time - on GoDaddy and could not connect to servers.

I used downloaded and used the wizard.php and received this error message:
Warning: mysql_connect(): Can’t connect to MySQL server on ‘64.202.163.215’ (111) in /home/content/p/u/r/purplecoast/html/drafts/wizard.php on line 318

I then used the database test found at /system/utilities/dbtest.php at received these error messages:
Warning: mysql_connect(): Unknown MySQL server host ‘YOUR_HOSTNAME’ (1) in /home/content/p/u/r/purplecoast/html/drafts/cucee/utilities/dbtest.php on line 12

Unable to connect to your database server

Warning: mysql_select_db(): Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket ‘/usr/local/mysql-5.0/data/mysql.sock’ (2) in /home/content/p/u/r/purplecoast/html/drafts/cucee/utilities/dbtest.php on line 28

Warning: mysql_select_db(): A link to the server could not be established in /home/content/p/u/r/purplecoast/html/drafts/cucee/utilities/dbtest.php on line 28
Unable to select your database

I have read most of the GoDaddy issues on the forum, but still couldn’t get the install to work. I understand this may be a problem on a GoDaddy side. I’m new to servers and php , so if I need to call GoDaddy, please let me know exactly what to ask them.

Hello redkeel, the problem appears to be the server name. What did you put in there? It is quite often “localhost”, but not always. Also, you already need a MySQL database, which your host will setup for you, EE only populates it, but does not create it.

To install ExpressionEngine you will need: The name of your database server, the name of the database, your username, and your password. It’s a good idea to try that with the wizard. It seems you put in “YOUR_HOSTNAME” instead of the actual db hostname? My suggestion is to simply leave localhost in there, see how it goes.

Everything will be good in the end. If it’s not good, it’s not the end.

Thanks, I was very happily able to get it to work.

Turns out I needed a very specific MySql address to use on GoDaddy. “localhost” did not work. Maybe because I have a couple of other databases set up? If anyone else runs into this problem, here’s where I found it. Go to your control panel and databases. Click on the pencil icon of the database you are using for EE. For the EE field called MySql Server address, use the GoDaddy “Hostname”.

That is good news!

That shouldn’t matter, but sometimes the webserver and the db server are separate machines. Makes a lot of sense, actually.

Thanks for letting us know, and glad it’s all taken care of.
