Is it possible to send email notifications automatically from EE?

I’m looking into purchasing EE to set it up as a service status weblog but I’m not quite sure if it handle email notifications and could use some guidance.

Basically I have two email scenarios:

- When a new post is added, the author can then manually send an email out to a pre-determined list of emails.
- If a post is scheduled to be published in the future, when it is published an email is automatically sent out to a pre-determined list of emails.

At the moment I was originally thinking that EE could email a Mailman mailing list email which would then handle the actual delivery to the subscriber group, but if this can be integrated right into EE (including customer sign-up / unsubscribe) that would be awesome. The most important requirement is the ability to manual send or schedule send based on entries.

Is this doable either native or via a module?

Thanks!

Hi, neilio, welcome to the forums!

You can set up a notification list, but those are sent manually at the time the new post is published.  It is not sent at the time the post comes live, with future dating.

You could build an extension to do this - you can read about that in our [url=http://expressionengine.com/docs/development[/url].

Another option is to use RSS, or even an RSS -> email service.  You could then restrict what shows in the RSS feed by status, and thereby have your manual notifications.

I looked into RSS>Email services and for the most part they were limited or had really confusing configuration settings. I’m not strong in PHP so I’m not exactly sure where I would start looking if I wanted to build an extension for EE.

Is this something you would consider as a feature request, or would I basically have to either build something myself or find someone who could?

You could certainly put in a feature request, but those other options were for immediate solutions. =)

If you wanted to hire someone, there is the Job Board, as well as the Professionals Network. =)

You may have already gone this route, but FeedBurner has a few different options for relaying updates to an RSS feed via email. I’ve found it fairly reliable for general use.
