I saw that little write-up on DF but never took the time to play around with it. Looks like I’ll need to do so - this seems like a godsend. Transmit seems to crash on me all the time mad

I checked it out again too and now it works like a charm.
This also solves my oldest gripe with textmate as I can now open several files at once and have them in the same window. Great!

Heh heh - just found about this, excitedly blogged about it, came straight here to the forum to tell everyone, but you all know already!

FWIW, I’m using this with EngineHosting with no problems at all.

We were able to get the developers of ExpanDrive the information they needed about the SFTP server software EngineHosting is using so thanks for the update, Dave, I’m glad they were able to resolve the issues.

ExpanDrive is very cool, but it has some limitations that make me very rarely use it.

• The progress indicator gives no actual indication of progress - it always shows something like “uploading 108MB of 108MB” or something like that (not using it now).
• Uploads and downloads happen one at a time, not in parallel, which slows things down.
• It’s scary! There’s something about seeing things in an interface like Transmit that is reassuring. One side is clearly local, and one is clearly remote, and it will always be that way unless you change it.  With ExpanDrive suddenly you’ve got regular finder windows open for a remote location - while it hasn’t happened yet I can see how easily I could modify something thinking I was on my local copy, when in reality I’m messing with a live file.  Whenever I use it I find myself double and triple checking to make sure I’m using the right files.
• I like to keep a local copy of everything anyway, so I might as well test it locally before moving it to the live server. Less chance for error, and either way I have to copy it from one side to the other no matter what…

That said it is really useful for testing things on a live server. If you have something that needs a debugging but can’t do it locally, this is awesome. So for me it’s very nice, but much less useful than I thought it was going to be.

There’s sort of a workaround for opening multiple remote files in the same window, using TextMate and Transmit here:

Anyone else experiencing extreme slowness with Expandrive? I takes forever for me to open a file or save a file in Textmate. I tried it on a few different connections. And I tried moving the TM project to the remote drive.

I’m hoping to switch from Coda to Textmate but the slowness is holding me back from taking the plunge.

Hi Mark,

Using Expandrive on my setup and no problems with speed. Every now and then (and it really is quite a lot less since the last update) it sometimes drops the connection but I’m actually pretty sure that’s something to do with my computer but that really is very rare. Opening files is as quick as I would expect opening files from a remote server. In fact I would say it’s just slightly quicker than opening a file using an FTP program.

I know that doesn’t help your case at all but just wanted to let you know that it all works fine here.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Best wishes,

Mark

Thanks Mark. Perhaps it’s something I’ll need to live with.

Do you think it’s better to save the TM project file on the remote server or locally on my machine? Or doesn’t it matter?

Hi Mark,

I’m not too sure what you mean by TM (guess you mean TextMate?) project file as I don’t use TextMate I’m afraid. What exactly is the TM project file? I thought you were trying to use ExpanDrive to open up remote files?

Sorry I’m probably not understanding as I don’t use TextMate though. Lots of others on here do though so I’m sure one of them will be able to lend a hand with this though.

Best wishes,

Mark

Yep, TM = Textmate. And a project file is a collection of files (as in all the EE template files for a given site could all be viewed/opened/editing from a single TM project).

It’s not a big deal - I’ll play around with it.

Thanks much, Mark.

Thanks for pointing to this great app. I downloaded it last night and it worked like a dream! No problem at all with my Engine Hosting account and on my reseller space where I have all my other sites I discovered that they can use sftp, I didn’t know - brilliant!
It was a little slow last night but my Mac has been a little slow for the past week as I am in the middle of a 14 day JungleDisk back up.

Ah right so how does Transmit remember where the files are if you use a project then? At the moment my tool of choice to open up text files and html type files with is Coda and using ExpanDrive I find this exceptionally fast. I’m sure someone on here will hopefully be able to help you out on that one though.

Not a problem at all. Any time I can help out a fellow EE user I will do wink

In the small amount of testing I did late last night I found that I could not open remote files with Drag and Drop to Coda - got an application missing alert. Will look again tonight and try and set up a Site in Coda using the ExpanDrive as the location.

Mind you I cannot preview php files in Coda…

Simon sounds like you have issues there as I can open any type of file in Coda without a problem. I have also set up my computer to automatically use Coda for .html, .css, .php, .txt and so on and so forth files so that they automatically open in Coda with a double-click. It definitely should open PHP files though as I do that all the time.

Best wishes,

Mark

Oh it opens php no problem but It will not render php files when I hit preview. I did have a conversation with the Coda developers about this and they suggested a work around but that didn’t work.

Ah I see what you mean now! Are you using the Sites part of Coda to try and get this working and do you have a valid root url set and all that gubbins?

Best wishes,

Mark
