Hi everyone -

Back in the days when we used WordPress, we used a plugin to automatically turn commons phrases in our weblog entries into links that we specified in that plugin’s options page.  Well, we’re now looking for the same functionality in EE.  I assume this would be an Extension, but I’m no Add-on developer.

Here is a link to the existing WordPress Plugin that already does this:
aLinks: http://headzoo.com/alinks

Can anybody help out?  I’m sure a TON of people would love this since it would be great for SEO!

Thanks,

Doug

Hey sounds good!
I have a client looking for that now, if “Nappa Valley” is in a certain area, it links to other mentions on site or a certain weblog like a dictionary…automatically’. One would prob have to id it…<span=class=“something”>Nappa Valley</span> ?
Javascript? hmmm…almost done!

Word recognition? Key phrases? I wonder if a takeoff from Tag Cloud type plugin would be a start?

Hi Doug,

Don’t know if perhaps the Acronym module could be pushed to do what you want perhaps?

Hope that helps.

Best wishes,

Mark

Oops sorry,

Looking at it now I don’t think you will be able to use that after all. I thought that you may be able to put links into the acronym instead of just text but that doesn’t work.

You could perhaps get in touch with Solspace and see if it would be possible to modify this module to do such a thing though or you could have a go at writing one yourself?

Sorry about that.

Best wishes,

Mark

Hrm? I use the Acronym plugin for this, just make sure you have the module settings correct.

Hmm not sure if the Acronym plugin is exactly what I’m thinking, but it’s a start.  I looked at it a while back and I’m looking for something a bit more usable.  I’ve contacted Solspace to see if they have any ideas.

Thanks,

Doug

The acronym plugin or acronym module? The module is excellent and I see no reason why it wouldn’t suit your needs…

Alternatively, you can use global modules, but EE’s acronym module is *much* better if your client uses a screen reader - less links to listen through, search form.

Heed the advice of Lisa, she knows all.

I would totally agree. Heed the advice of Lisa…

…hmmm or was it me that suggested it!! grin

I knew there was a reason why I had said you could use the Acronym module. I had done this on a site some time back but then forgot about it just after I had posted so was thinking that the module would only work as an acronym replacer but if you turn on the fantastic Replace String Function then you should be set to do exactly what you need!! grin

Hope that helps.

Best wishes,

Mark

Yup,

As I said above, if you use the Replace String Function then you can do what you are after with no problems.

Hope that helps.

Yeah that does look like a great solution with the Acronym MODULE (which I didn’t know existed!) - thanks for sharing the Solspace thread, Bruce!  My one question is what happens when you are already linking on of your “Acronyms” in the body of your post?  Does the acronym module screw up the existing link by trying to replace it with the one you’ve specified in the module?  I guess the only way to find out is to try it…

Thanks,

Doug

Hi Doug,

Not too sure by what you mean when you say you are already linking one of your Acronyms in the body?
Best bet would probably just be to, as you say, give it a try! grin

Most things can be overcome in EE as we all know so there will probably be a way of getting whatever you want if it doesn’t work out of the box, so to say!

Let us know how it goes.

Best wishes,

Mark

I just tried out using the Replace functionality in the Acronym Module, and it’s not working like I would’ve hoped for.  For one, my ideal module would skip anything that’s already in certain HTML tags so it does not interfere with formatting or site structure.

As you can see by viewing the links below, I have the acronym “HP” listed twice in the story… once in the post image’s ALT tag, and once in the body of the story.  The module is replacing the characters “HP” even when they are in an IMG tag attribute.

<img src="http://www.dabbledoo.com/ee/images/uploads/gadgetell/hp_2710p_175.jpg" title="" alt="<a href="http://www.gadgetell.com/tech/tag/HP/">HP</a> 2710p Tablet PC with 64GB SSD option" width="175" height="196" align="right" />

IS NOT using the Acronym Module:

IS using the Acronym Module:

I’d love to see a skip=“a,img” or something like that added.  Any other thoughts on how I can do this?

Thanks!

Aha,

I see what you mean now. Not too sure how to get around that one at the moment. Would probably be a good idea to post that one on the Solspace forums see if they can add a feature in there for that purpose.

I’ve got to say though whenever I use this feature (Acronyms) I only ever use it on fields with only text in them. Any images on any sites that I create always go into separate fields. Just the way I like to do things really.

I will have a think about this one though but for now perhaps best to post on the Solspace forums.

Best wishes,

Mark

OK, I’ve posted it over in the Solspace thread mentioned above.  I’d really like to see a module developed whos sole purpose is autolinking.  Seems like a LOT of people would love this since it is essential to good SEO.

Thanks for your continued help everybody!

Well I think that the Acronym module is pretty much already there in that respect. Could you not perhaps just rename the images so that they don’t ever have any of your acronyms in them?

Just a thought though. I know it’s not ideal but an idea for now?

Best wishes,

Mark
