This seems like a bug, but it could be functioning as intended?  If so I think it’s pretty confusing:

In Admin->Weblog Admin->Weblog Management->Edit Prefs->Weblog Posting Prefs you have a few options.  If you set the default weblog formatting to “Convert HTML into Character Entries” and also set “Automatically turn URLs and email addresses into links?” to “Yes”, the Character Entries setting seems to be winning an internal coup, as the system doesn’t turn URLs and email addresses into links.

I guess technically auto-converting a URL or email address turns it into HTML, but that still seems a bit odd.  The person isn’t directly entering HTML, just something safe like www.myurl.com or email@address.com.  Technically the end result after conversion is HTML, but...?

Is that a bug?

EDIT: Damn - forgot once again.  This is on 1.6.1 - uhhh builds 20071113 and 20071114

I’m going to let Paul or Jones respond to this.  Personally I wouldn’t view this as a bug but they may feel differently.

I probably would not consider this a bug, because the “Convert HTML into Character Entries” setting is meant to make sure no HTML is outputted and quite a few people expect it to do that, no matter what.

I haven’t checked, but does that mean that if you have a field set to XHTML or <br /> that those <p> or <br /> tags won’t be outputted either?  Would they be stripped completely, or show in the content as <p> and <br />?

Nopers.  It is basically what is submitted by the user is converted (or not in the case of links/URLs).  The chosen formatting of the entry is still going to take place.

Ok - thanks for the clarification. I still think it’s a bit random and unexpected, but since it’s a feature and not a bug I guess that’s ok wink

It is one of those situations where it has been in the code for years now and most likely there are people depending on it working this way.  I am not particularly pulled either way myself, but as this is the first time I can recall it being reported as a possible bug, I am thinking it should stay.

I kind of thought it might be a situation like that. The only reason I noticed was I was trying to get Markdown to work with auto-URL generation and so testing out all the different combos of those settings I could. Still can’t get Markdown to work with auto-URL generation, but I learned some stuff so it’s not all bad.

Thanks again Paul.

Could make your own plugin (or modify the Markdown) to call the Typography class and do the conversion yourself.

I was thinking of digging into the Markdown plug-in, but the budget has dried up on that project (and I’m a sub to boot), so instead of allowing both options for link generation, they just have to do it the Markdown way.  I’ll probably look at it again soon though as I’ve pretty much been converted away from WYSIWYG to the Markdown/Textile way of formatting.  Seems a lot less finicky and browser/human error prone…
