Greetings, ExpressionEngine-dom, we are pleased to announce the release of ExpressionEngine 1.6.1 “Albatross”. This version update includes all of the bug fixes and enhancements made since the release of 1.6, as well as plenty of new toys. We are convinced that many of these additions will have you swinging from the rafters, hooting and hollering and whatnot with joy. ExpressionEngine 1.6.1 is a free update for all licensed users with an active Download Account, and we encourage you to update to benefit from the multitude of features we have worked hard on over the past couple months while still working away on that 2.0 idea of ours.
Read more about it in the Change Log for more details.
The template that will be used for a Live Look at your entries. Links are available from both the main Edit section of the control panel as well as the “View Entry” page that displays after submitting an entry. If you do not want to use a Live Look Template with a weblog, simply set this preference to “No Live Look Template”.
Live Look: This link allows you to view the entry in a template of your choice. This will appear in place of the View link when a template is specified in the preferences for the weblog.
I don’t know how to better describe it, but I’m open to suggestions. Set the preference in one of your weblogs to a template, and then in the Edit section, click the Live Look link to see what happens.
Ryanb, did you read the version update notes? You will either need to replace your themes or update your customized themes per the instructions provided.
The live look feature has 1 bad thing
You can’t provide your custom link/template
Normally you would use “mydomain.com/template_group/template/entry_title”
But i use sometimes “mydomain.com/template_group/entry_title”
Example:
www.domain.com/article/peaches_are_red_instead_of_green
Instead of:
www.domain.com/article/comments/peaches_are_red_instead_of_green
Maybe add possibility to select template group too??
I know a lot of sites that remove the “comments/details” template from the url.
These aren’t links intended to be bookmarked or to ever be visited by the public. In other words, they are not front-end permalinks. It’s just so you can quickly see what the entry will look like on the template of your choice.
In my case, many of my templates use segment-based switches to decide which content to show. I’ll just make “preview” templates… That’ll make things easier from a status control standpoint, anyway.
I’d be interesteed in the thought process behind going this route rather than allowing us to create a preview template on a per-weblog basis, to replace the view entry page at the end of publication, though.

Yes, in some cases it may serve you best to make a separate template just for this if you do not already have a template designed to work as a standard single entry template (i.e. a weblog entries tag that gets its information dynamically from the URL). But you’ll notice (after setting it up) that you do indeed have a Live Look link on the view entry page after publishing as well. This is basically what this is, though I wouldn’t use the word ‘preview’ because the entry has to exist in the database for this feature to work.

Right, I’ve just always wanted to be able to customize the view entry page to lay out the post correctly. Mostly because my boss doesn’t quite understand the concept of contextual presentation. If it doesn’t look right on the view entry page, it must not look right on the rest of the site, either.
I’m also not trying to beat you up on the issue, I’m perfectly happy with the way Live Look was implemented for the moment, and my sites upgraded to 1.6.1 with no issues whatsoever. Mitch over at Solspace can tell you, I’m just always going “but what if…”
my favourite: Made current_time available for use in conditionals. this is gold for my calendar!
but! still no pagination for gallery categories :( can I use this opportunity to ask about the difficulty of implementing this feature? It’s hard for me to understand why pagination is everywhere BUT the gallery categories…
