After getting slammed with trackback spam this am, I would like to request these things:

1.  A way to mass-edit (i.e. mass-delete) trackbacks and/or comments;

2.  A way to automatically add ip’s to the blacklist module upon deletion; and

3.  A way to add keywords to the blacklist module;

4.  The blacklist needs to apply to both comments and trackbacks; and

5.  A way to have trackbacks automatically turned off after x days, just like comments can be turned off.

I second all of these.  Same problems as CharlesG.

Having spent the morning cleaning up trackback spam, I’d like to third these—especially #1 and 5.

for just trackbacks - just add the url to the blacklist module and it will clean them all up instantly.

I agree the above features would be very useful - just saying that for trackback spam there is some handleability =)

I’d second #5 but I’m already on record for that one, and during this particular period of time I’m very much against voting twice.  wink

BTW, is there a tag that will allow the sender’s IP to be included in the notification e-mail? It doesn’t look like it according to my Admin ›  Email Notification Templates ›  Admin Notification of Trackbacks page.

Including the IP in that notification would be helpful, I think.

Lisa,

Are you saying that after adding a url the module will then re-scan old trackbacks and delete them based on the updated urls?  If so, it’s not doing that for me.

one more question:

all the spam I got this morning came from a common url with different subdomains, e.g., they all came from “i-am-a-spammer.com” but each individual trackback was something like “sex.i-am-a-spammer.com” or “cartoon.i-am-a-spammer.com”.

if I just add “i-am-a-spammer.com” to the blacklist module, will it catch everything from that domain event though they have different subdomains?

(the spam really wasn’t from “i-am-a-spammer.com” but I’m not going to give them the benefit of added rankings when google spiders this page by typing the actual url).  maybe others got hit from the same loser.

Ok, I spoke too soon—after adding the domain the module does seem to have gone back and deleted prior trackbacks, so it’s not just a “from this point forward” thing.  That’s good.  Still trying to figure out if one domain will catch all subdomains.

It should, Charles - it did when I did it.  But the expressions can be a bit tricky.  I would just copy an existing one and put it in.  ie -spammer- =)  There are lots of examples already in there that you can use to help make sure you get the right thing.

It’s just simple string matches for those “URLs”, I think.  So if you just put in the domain name (without the “www.”) then it should catch any and all subdomains.  It you leave off the “.com” then it would also catch any .net, .org, etc.

Basically, if your specified string exists in the URL then it should be caught.
