This is what I have seen in another neat CMS system:

{SPACER:widthxheight}

This will create a spaceholder HTML image tag (transparent GIF).
Sample: {SPACER:10x5} = img/leer.gif

Could something like that be done in EE as well?

Thought it’s a nice idea.

Transparent images for placeholders… [shudder]  Pretty much all modern web design/development decries the practice of using transparent GIF images for page layout purposes; I personally don’t know that EE should be actively supporting outdated design practices like that.

That having been said… there’s nothing to stop someone from creating a Plugin to accomplish this.  I just rather doubt it would ever be part of the core product.

I would have to agree with Chris…dbl-shudder… If you get into using CSS for the majority of your layout, you really shouldn’t need a spacer gif.

Well, now I really need the input of you gurus - íf I’m using CSS for my websites and like e.g. to set the background images - how do I’m make sure, that the block eg DIV is exactly the same size as my background image - can I use height in style definitions?

your input is very much appreicated.

‘Westciv’ is also currently offering their CSS Level 1 course for free.  Definitely a good way to learn CSS.

I believe there is one situation where a transparent gif is useful in conjunction with CSS. You put a nav image in the background in your CSS and use the transparent gif in your link/image tag in the html. If I recall correctly that technique (or something similar) is used for image rollovers without Javascript.
But, I do agree that it shouldn’t be used just for layout/positioning purposes.
