I often like to provide a link from some text within a post (it can be new or I might be updating it) to another page on my site or some other site.

What I’d like to be able to do is select the text that I want to be the name of the link, press the link “button”, fill in the forms and have the newly created link replace the selected text and the selected text be the suggested link name.

Instead, the link always appears at the bottom of the content entry field that has the focus. (in pMachine, adding an image worked this way, but in EE it has been fixed. The image tag will appear at the cursor. Thanks!)

So, the workflow might be something like this…here is some text in a post.

“This dam of this puppy is our Millenia who has had several great litters…”

1) Select the word “Millenia”
2) Click on link
3) Paste in the URL for Millenia’s page
4) Accept the suggested name, “Millenia” since that is the text I’ve highlighted and the link name I want
5) When done with the link wizard, the proper link html has replaced the word Millenia in the original text with a link named Millenia.

This would make adding links much, much easier and faster.

Rick, I’ve had this same problem lately with all of my buttons. They worked fine at first but now the tags get added instead to the end of the text. I never used the link button but I’d think that while the other buttons worked properly it did too.

I suppose I should have put this in a bug report when I first noticed it, but I’ve been accustomed to typing my tags in anyway so I just shrugged it off.

I understand EE 1.1 will be the next update; maybe this will be fixed in that (although it might be nice if a quick fix could be made available before then, if it’s going to be a while).

This isn’t actually a “bug”, I’m afraid.  What it is is a limitation of making things cross-browser and cross-platform compatible.  The various browsers don’t yet support a common set of “rich text” type features for textareas, so supporting all the different types isn’t easy.

I know there’a s lot of research and thought going in to improving this area of EE, but I don’t know when anything related to it will be released.  It is, unfortunately, much harder to program things to work in a specific way than it is to with them that way! [grin]
