I was just curious as to what people using macs are running as their main system.  Personally, I’m on Panther still.  I know, I know… but my current machine came with it, and I was waiting out Tiger for Leopard.... so I should upgrade soon.  Panther’s a nice system still. 

I suspect most here are on Tiger.  Some are probably running some Leopard build, you lucky dogs. 

I was kind of curious if anyone still runs Jaguar though.  I think Jaguar is the minimum system you could get away with in terms of functionality and speed.  Unless, of course, you use System 6 on an SE-30 or something--it would fly then.  :D Except getting online, that is.

Yeah I am a Tiger guy upgraded in the first week of release. Well I bought a new laptop with tiger in it I guess. And I will be in line for leopard because of what apple is doing with bootcamp.

Same here… on Tiger but can’t wait for Leopard. I’m excited for the new finder, mail, stacks, spaces, quick look, and even time machine.

10.2 was the first version I could actually stand using.  10.0-10.1 were utter jokes.  I held on to 9.2.x until 10.2 came around.

I’ve been pretty happy with 10.4.  There are a couple of quirks in it that I’m not a big fan of (mostly in the networking areas).  I’m hoping those are handled better in 10.5.

The thing I’m most excited about in 10.5, beyond the obvious improvements, is the final death of those stupid pinstripes in the menu drop downs.  I not a fan.  Silly thing I know, but they bug me.

Lisa, since you write so much in the forums here… Maybe Ellis labs should buy you a pretty new MacBook Pro

I always update to the latest.
Disagree with Jamie though. True, the early versions weren’t as robust as the latter but they were the future so I jumped right in. Of course classic was still running as a lot of the programs I use weren’t native at the time.

My main issue with them both was that I simply couldn’t be productive in them.  They were incredibly slow on my G3.  At 10.2 the optimizations they made speed wise were dramatic.  I ended up using the computer for another 2 years after that quite happily.

The previous versions were cool and I liked playing around with them.  But they were just too buggy, and too slow for me to deal with.  Especially when OS 9 (for all its non multitasking) was very fast and, at least for me, more stable.

But OS X is definitely the future.  I’m glad Apple made the change.  Just glad I didn’t have to really use the first two versions for any real work.

The timing of the first OSX coincided with me getting a brand new cinema system so I was running on the latest and didn’t suffer the slowness (even though it wasn’t optimized). If I had been running it on my older system I might have had the same criticisms/experience. ;-)

Edit-Add: I do remember not liking it at all the first two weeks but slogged along and it caught on. Of course I remember when EE was first intro’d or beta’d and wondering what the heck is this, it was so different that pMachinePro. Didn’t like it either until I really got into it.

Yes, I agree 10.2 was the first practically usable system.  It’s a shame they used “Cheetah” already, and for the slowest of the OS X systems.  Ah well.  I see just about everyone so far has moved on to Tiger or farther but me.  So, come on Leopard!

Tiger for me Roooaaaarrr!!!

Have used Macs now ever since the very first real consumer led units came out, well in my eyes anyway the Mac Classics. Absolutely beautiful machines even to this day. I would love to get my hands on a really good condition one of those one day as they are really cute.

I class myself as a Power user knowing the system inside and out and sometimes even upside down so I do like to keep up with the latest systems and everything else that goes with that but having said that at the place where I work I had to hold on to System 9 for quite a while as my day job is as Senior Producer for a commercial production company where our main-stay is radio adverts and so we use Pro Tools systems. The only problem with that being that Digidesign are one of the slowest bunch of application developers out there and so I couldn’t upgrade my system to OSX because the hardware I had would stop working if I did that!!
It used to work on the very first OSX systems that came out but as soon as they (Apple) added in Core Audio support which should have made things easier for Digidesign they (Digidesign) in their infinite wisdom decided to take the easy option and use the Core Audio support but drop support on OSX for the hardware I was using!!

I am almost 150% sure they did this so people would have to upgrade as the hardware worked with previous versions of the system and should definitely have worked with the later versions.

Even to this day they still have bugs in the program which go way back to when they first released it! And a few others that have snuck in there!!! For a system which costs well over £16,000 it’s a little ridiculous to have the small nit-picking bugs that are in the system there!!

That is why I like to use systems such as EE because in my mind there are no bugs whatsoever in the system and if ever there are or were any I can say without a doubt that the excellent developers here would have them eradicated in probably less than a minute or so!!

At home though I have a MacBook Pro my wife has a MacBook and we also have a Dual G4 and a 9600 etc…

I absolutely love Macs and could never ever look back again.

Anyway will stop babbling on now as I am sure I have bored most of you to tears with all of this!!

I just got my MacBook Pro 17” with Hi/Def screen a couple of months ago and I love it. I think Jamie’s comment was funny. Not belittling his comment about the pinstripes but as mac users it is funny that with the latest version that is one of the things that we have to gripe about. I remember my almost brand new HP Laptop that now is relegated to jukebox role upstairs. It has a dark screen with low resolution (1440x900 or so) is slow, buggy, capable of cathcing a virus at a sneeze, and slow, ugly, did I mention slow…

Guided Tour

I’m using Tiger, but I am so ready for Leopard. I love new OS releases. Right now I’m debating between purchasing my new MacBook Pro or waiting to after Leopard is released to get it. There’s a part of me, hoping that Apple will also do a hardware upgrade once Leopard’s out, and my top of the line laptop could become the cheaper bottom of the line laptop. Then the decision would be cheaper laptop with the basic specs I need, and extra money for iPhone, 160GB iPod Classic, and maybe a new iPod nano; or spend the money that I already planned and get better specification that I’m certain, I’ll grow into.  Decisions.
