Awesome!

I’ve been considering Basecamp, but this would be way better! Wholly integrated in EE, makes a strong case towards clients, and while they engage in the project they’re allready learning to get accustomed with their future CMS.

I’d be willing to pay some (reasonable) licence fee for this easily.

Can’t wait ‘till first stable release.

I found ProjectPier... it might be useful for some people. Its actually a fork of the activeCollab project when it used to be free. ProjectPier is open source and a good option for those people who are still paying for Basecamp.

I badly need to choose the right PM tool.

On the 5th of October, Activecollab is releasing Version 1.0 priced at $199 for small business (they’ve changed their original ridiculous pricing plan)

There is still CopperProject at $499 basic “standard download” price

Basecamp isn’t the right choice for me:

Clients don’t want their personal data on someone else’s server AND Basecamp doesn’t offer multilingual support for international clients.

Then of course, i could try using EE, just like Sue Crocker does, and Stephen, in a much more ellaborate way.

Maybe we could “donate” some time to Stephen hey !

I also found myToDoListPHP which can be used as a simple project management system. It does the job.

I’ve just recently gotten interested in project management, for a personal project. There’s a ton of stuff out there.
Going with the gran-daddy for now: basecamphq.com.
It’s amazing how well this type of google search works.
Enter any you know of such as basecamp and then enter the two letters vs.
It turned up another one just now, an open source solution called dotProject:
http://www.dotproject.net/
Not to be confused with asp.net it is a PHP application, looks kind of useful actually with a quick look at the demo, a bit overly complex maybe.
Sorry if this one was mentioned already, the threads pretty long. Other collaboration sites have you sharing ideas, in hopes of earning some cash, fun maybe but not for pros.

After searching for an Open Source, good but not to complex project management system I can finally say I found the right one. Its called Collabtive... I’m currently using it and it works great. I haven’t had any problems with it even though is still beta. Nice interface too.

We used AC .7.1 to manage the redesign of pMachine.com to the EllisLab network. I’m really hopeful that AC 1.0 will be a legit, self-hosted alternative to Basecamp.

Is EllisLab still using ActiveCollab for project management? I ask because I value the opinions of the EllisLab team, who obviously know what quality is.  smile

I’m starting to feel that the money I’ve been spending on Basecamp could be better used elsewhere, and I’m not at all opposed to paying for a quality product - even the Corporate Version of activeCollab would cost me less than Basecamp within a year. In addition, I could brand the template(s) more so than I can the Basecamp template(s), and all the data is kept on my server.

I finally broke down and signed up for the free trial of basecamp - and entered one of my projects into it.  It is surprisingly simple (a little too much so).  In fact, its really easy to see how the major features could be mapped into EE.  Then graft on a little JavaScript from the Yahoo libraries and presto!

There are a few data structure challenges which may cause a little grief.  I guess I would want to be able to divide different projects into separate, identically structured tables.  I’m not sure that EE supports this type of thing at the moment, though.

Barring table separation, it could be simulated by drawing relationships between project items and the “project ID” record.

Hmmm…  Anyone have other thoughts?

We’ve all but completed this project and there was some custom PHP involved in getting EE to do what we needed.  We’re headed to SXSW and see how EE 2.0 affects our project.  After we return, we’ll provide an update about how/when we’ll be releasing this project.

Stephen,

Hope you had a good time here in Austin.  It was a good conference.  We’re working on our own EE based PM system right now as well.  I tried to look at yours, but it seems 0101 is gone.

Any updates?

Hi Lisi, try entering the other projects 102 or 103, and then clicking around using the nav tabs, alot of it is still there. I thought too, without 101 nothing was available.

Hey Guys…

I’ll look at this later today and see what is going on.  I haven’t logged into that demo in a while.  It’s news to me that it’s messed up.  Sorry about that.

The development version of it has changed significantly.  We could finish it in a week if we could find the time.  My sincere apologies.  We are a small group and our clients are very very active right now.  I cannot express how much I want to finish this project off so we can utilize it internally.

I believe version 2.0 of EE has affected the approach we’ve taken to develop it, but not significantly and not something that cannot be reconciled with relative ease.  As it stands, this project is the first priority as soon as we can find the breathing room.

I’m sorry I only just stumbled on this thread. I don’t often visit the lounge but had some time and decided to browse.

WOW - I use basecamp and have always disliked the disconnect created when using it. It’s never been a comfortable part of my daily work flow.

@ Stephen Slater - I too would be very interested in looking under the hood - so to speak - at your alternative.

Kudos!

I would be very interested in seeing the product developed by Stephen Slater. Unfortunately the URL http://cs.demo.flyingdeuce.com/ does not work.
