PS. Will there be a clear upgrade path from 1.52 to 1.6?
Yep, same as always.
Also can someone explain what the benefit of Category Custom Fields would be?
They allow you to store any type of metadata with your categories that you want, so we expect people to find all kinds of nifty uses for them. Have you ever built a site and used the Category Image field for something other than an image? Well now you can define your own fields so you do not have to pigeon hole existing fields for unintended purposes.
Let’s say that your site was a community driven review of all the State and National Parks in the U.S., and you wanted to use states for your categories. Maybe a particular person was in charge of the accuracy of each state’s entries, and you wanted to put a link on your entries to contact the proper person. Previously you could have used the Image field to hold the person’s email address, used a drop-down field in that weblog, making your authors remember who was who, or used a related weblog instead of categories, so that your “State” entries could have additional associated data. Now you have a third option: making a category field for “Email contact”. And you can make another one for “State bird” or “Overall rating”, etc. Or perhaps there is particular markup or CSS you want used for each category. We saw an opportunity to raise the ceiling on another room of ExpressionEngine and give you more power with categories than ever before.
And very lastly, will you be producing any more screencast videos? The current ones got me hooked so perhaps some nice shiny ones that show more of the features (See Apple Leopard Preview videos for what I mean).
Leopard isn’t out until October, though, and we like those movies to get us excited and tide us over. You’ll have your hands on 1.6 rather soon, so probably not. :-D
