Tell us what you did, and what did (not) work.

well, i found this document in the knowledge base i think. it was about removing the index.php file. i tried it but some of the steps were really hard to understand. there were some codes and scripts i belive but they didn’t make sense. i know a majority of expression engine sites have the index.php removed from the url. how can i do that. is there anyone who maybe can rewrite the index file and send the code. i can’t really make out what its telling me to do in the instructions

Well, there are several methods, so without knowing what exactly you attempted, we’re not really able to help you. From personal experience I can assure you that the steps do make sense, by the way. Which part of the instructions did you have trouble with?

i know a majority of expression engine sites have the index.php removed from the url.

I’m not convinced that’s really the case.

I’m sorry, what I said still holds true. You will have to tell us details, a simple “it doesn’t work” is not enough, I am afraid.

It’s actually sad that this thread still has no links or resolutions, nor ideas about how to go about this.
While the solution may be easy to some, there is still no “Official” method for doing this.

The only links regarding this process is here:
http://www.eewiki.com/wiki?title=Remove_index.php_From_URLs#Instructions

…a link that comes from here:
http://expressionengine.com/knowledge_base/article/can_i_completely_remove_the_indexphp_from_my_url_structure/

It’s also mentioned here:
http://expressionengine.com/wiki/Cruft_Free_URLs/
(is this more ‘official’? no. it’s in the wiki)

It is quite confusing and potentially frustrating for beginners to employ this method without some consternation.
It would be wonderful if there were an official option for turning this on and off.

Devs?

Sad? Not exactly the word that springs to mind immediately.

While the solution may be easy to some, there is still no “Official” method for doing this.

And there won’t be, I daresay. There is a method, a few, actually, and it’s documented in the wiki, but it’s not officially supported. We know that mod_rewrite is not universally implemented on all servers, does not generally work on Non-Apache servers, etc.

It is quite confusing and potentially frustrating for beginners to employ this method without some consternation.

Then, please, don’t. It is a semi-advanced technique, and while people on the forums are quite happy to help you with it (if you do in fact tell them what - precisely - you attempted, and what results you got), it may not work in all cases, and is not officially supported.

It would be wonderful if there were an official option for turning this on and off.

I’m not sure that’s feasible.

Devs?

Not in a Core forum, I should think.

The funny thing is, we’d really like to help you, you know? You just don’t make it too easy for us.

On the internet, nobody knows you’re a dog teenager. And being new to anything in general and EE in particular is really nothing to be ashamed of.

Actually to jump in here, I just searched the wiki and I didn’t see it. (Although I do see it on the eewiki.com site and will use those instructions.)

Where is it within the wiki?

Thanks,
