Has anyone done a conversion of “Hemingway” for EE?

It’s here and runs on Wordpress and Typo.

I don’t care much for the white on black, but the black on white version (example here is very clean.

I’m tired of my current (cough) “design”...

Hey Steve D… I’m actually working on moving Hemingway over to EE right now, but time hasn’t exactly been my friend during the week.  Now that the weekend is here, I plan on hopefully getting it done.  With luck, I’ll be able to avoid the need for requiring PHP in the index template.  I’ll let you know how progress is going if you’d like.  grin

Indeed, that really is one of the nicest Wordpress themes out there. Even Powazek is using it these days smile

Hey everyone.  I spent the better part of the afternoon getting Hemingway all fleshed out, and so far so good.  There’s a fair bit of work that still needs to be done, but its all easy work… so I’m hoping to get the bulk of it done after dinner.  If you guys want to check out what I have so far, head on over to the Hemingway Theme Preview and give it a play.

Fair warning… some things are either not working as they should, or aren’t working at all because I got a bit of a late start and I’m famished…  wink  Just wanted to give you guys something to critique.  It’ll all be working as intended by tomorrow, hopefully!

Edit: Don’t ask me how I got the two posts on the index to line up almost evenly height-wise… it was just dumb luck!  tongue wink

It looks darned good!  I need to go over to the original side and figure out how to do black text on a light background.  On second thought, I guess I could just look at the css at Ted Leung’s site.

Oooh, think I’ll use CSSEdit to bump Ted’s CSS up against CrimsonDawn’s test site…

Oh, never mind.  I see that Hemingway comes with a white alternative style sheet.

Yep, it sure does!  cheese

Once it’s ready for testing/releasing, I’ll include the white.css file so that it’s only a matter of linking it below the default one (white/grey on black) to change it to black on white.  There’s also a user_style.css which is basically meant for you to go in there and customize it to your heart’s desire without having to muck around with the core style sheet too much.

Time to get back to “work!”  wink

Sorry for the lack of updates, guys.  Hockey playoffs are upon us (go Rangers!), and I’ve been glued to the TV.  However, between games I’ve been working on Hemingway via a local install and I’m pleased to say that it is almost ready to go.  Tomorrow evening, after I finish cleaning some things up, I’ll post a pre-release that you guys can download and test out on your own local or live (probably not a good idea, though) sites and let me know if anything needs changing/fixing/tweaking.

See you tomorrow!

Neither of my teams made the playoffs - Blues and Blue Jackets - but I’ve spent way too much time watching the playoffs, too.

Versus didn’t carried a single Rangers game, though.  What’s with that?

We wouldn’t do well in a room together, Steve!  Hawks fan here, though, so I’m not likely to see my team in the playoffs anytime soon.  So, um…go Nashville?

CrimsonDawn, the theme conversion is looking very nice, great job!

Guess not, Derek, but the “dreaded Hawks” always made for an interesting game in St. Louis (been 14 years since I was there).  My best bud from STL moved to Phoenix and has had to suffer with the Coyotes.

At least the CBJ got rid of the GM….

Can’t root for Nashville - too much bad blood with Columbus.  Haven’t really picked teams yet although I’m partial to Buffalo in the East (sorry CrimsonDawn!) and Anaheim in the West.

I think Versus lost the Rangers to NBC who covered one or 2 of their playoff games.  I was just happy that they carried the other teams I don’t get to see often (West Coast teams, mainly), because I’m too poor to shell out $400+ for NHL Center Ice.

I feel for you being a Blues fan, Steve… really, I do.  tongue wink At least you got J.D. coaching, which should help in seasons to come.  I’m happy he didn’t get his hands on Prucha like he wanted.

Gonna get back to work so I can finish early and get this Hemingway pre-release done for you guys.

So sorry for the delay, everyone.  I forgot that tonight was an elimination game for the Islanders, and beer + Chris != good code…  tongue laugh

So now that I’m all (well, mostly) sobered up, here’s the (long awaited?) pre-release for Hemingway: Hemingway 1.0 Pre-Release

A few things worth mentioning:

1) I really wouldn’t use this on a live site as I’m sure things are going to change between this version and the final (not much, though).

2) I’m not at all happy with the right side of the footer area… I’m probably going to be doing some tweaking to get that looking much better.

3)I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do for a “complete archives” page, so there isn’t one included.  The current archives template that you’ll see is for the “monthly archives” in the bottom area of the theme.

4) In the bottom area, the “recently” section has an 2 post offset so that you won’t see the current posts in the list.  That can be changed, of course, but I thought it was silly to have them display twice.

5) In the bottom area again, I don’t have a Flickr account to test the plugin with, so I’m not exactly sure if the images will display nicely.  I’ve used the same code from the WordPress version of the theme so, in theory, it should look good.  Get back to me on that one, if possible.

6) On the comments page I initially had the pagination links in the sidebar area, but I wasn’t too happy with how it looked.  So to get around it, I slapped them below the posts.  The only downside is that I had to close off the initial weblog_entries tag and start a new one for the sidebar information.  If you think they would look better in the sidebar I’ll gladly move them there, which will also eliminate that extra weblog_entries call (though I think it’s fairly inconsequential…)

With all that said, check out the links on the pre-release page for where and how to report bugs.  Enjoy!

Regards,
Chris

Edit: Forgot to mention that Hemingway does NOT play nice with Internet Exploder 7, but works ok with Exploder 6.  For now, this is how it will remain until I get it fixed up.  No need to report that as a bug.  grin

Edit 2: Apparently, IE still doesn’t know how to add properly, so the percentage for the stories on the main page had to be reduced by one percent.  All is well and the pre-release archive has been updated to reflect the changes.  You just have to overwrite the site_css template with the one inside the tpl folder.

Edit 3: Wow, I suck… The template wouldn’t auto-install when creating a new weblog due to the 2 unknown stylesheets in there.  Forgot to remove them when I initially tested it.  Archives have been updated once again to reflect the changes, and now you just have to manually create the user_styles and white css templates via the tpl folder.  Sorry for that…  confused

Well, its been about a week and there haven’t been any bug reports at all (Yay me?)... so I’m going to go ahead and take tonight to tweak some things slightly, move the comment template pagination back to the sidebar (to get rid of that extra {exp:weblog:entries} call, and fix up the the footer area.

Expect a final release this weekend!

No worries, Steve!  Between games I’ve been trying to break it, and so far I really haven’t been able to.  The only glaring bug was that pesky IE7 one where the posts weren’t side-by-side… but its all fixed up now.  All I really want to do is make text wrap nicely around images, move the pagination on the comment template and fix that footer area (as mentioned above).

If you’d rather hold out for the “final,” that works.  As it stands, I feel pretty darn comfortable in saying that the templates are ready for releasing. grin
