As someone suggested, could more community/networking modules be developed? Also there’s only one choice of forum and no event calendar. I realize the latter could be adapted from a blog module, yet a dedicated events calendar module just seems to be one of those things that a lot of community-oriented sites would want to incorporate.
Your comments are not falling on deaf ears…
As a pure ‘content’ management system, EE is just fine. Maybe even better than fine.
Where it falls short (imo) is as an application for most of the common community-type sites. (It’s appropriate for a ‘product support’ community, but beyond that, there’s no comparison.) I’m not saying that EE needs to be able to morph into a ‘myspace’, but to be able to use it for other community-type sites would be great.
I wholeheartedly agree that more development in this area would be welcomed by many. Is it needed to improve the core EE product? No, but it would be nice, and would certainly open of EE’s use to a large audience.
(At the VERY least, have a development team full documentation for the product, and clean up the documentation in the plug in database… It’s great that the support forum is here, but many questions could be answered with proper documentation. But I digress…)
I’m not a programmer, but I’ve launched sites using: Movable type, Wordpress, Drupal, vBulletin, and other platforms.
I REALLY like EE’s content management, but the lack of several key features that visitors to my sites would ‘expect’ are lacking.
I’d be happy if I could at least ‘integrate’ or ‘bridge’ EE with vBulletin. I can get vBulletin to do every other social networking feature I need to build large community sites (my largest has 40,000 members)...What I have not found is a good content system to integrate with it. EE integration would be ideal. (if any developer wants to make that work, PM me).
For many site developers, ‘community’ is VERY important.
Certainly, content is still ‘king’ when it comes to websites (which EE does well), but community is ‘queen’...in this are EE falls very short…very.
