Basecamp is good but expensive if you need timetracking. Goplan os ok if you need ticketing, lighthouseap is very well for email ticketing. But I use Zoho Projects. In their free account they offer an amazing set of features, including:
- Real Timetracking (not just a formular like basecamp)
- Pseudo Gantt Charts
- Meeting Calendar
- Task Lists (external and Internal)
- Forum Modul
- Messeges Modul
- You can add notes to Tasks (so you can use it as Pseudo Ticket system)
- Milestones
- Calendar
- 100 MB space (in the free account)
- Unlimited users…. and so on… and so on…
For just $5 / month you get 3 Projects… instead of 1 for the free plan.
The design is pretty poor although and their Forum Support is very basic, well, actually every support compared with EE support is primitive, but they are upgrading their app on regular basis I think. You are best ones on the planet, even on weekends.
I use BaseCamp (up to 3 projects at a time suits me). I use iBiz on the MAC (was called iWork) - for time tracking. I use BlinkSale to send invoices. Blinksale uses the Basecamp API to get client details etc.
Can’t see any problems with Basecamp even if it is hosted! It really is more than project management - it is project collaboration!
I am using OSX and have been using Billings in tandem with Daylite for 6 months now. I find Billings wonderful for time tracking and invoicing and Daylite for everything else and it is a desktop app which is great. And they have clean looking and simple UIs and fit in with the MAC environment perfectly.

I also think Billings has excellent invoicing control except for one major flaw (imo), you can’t have multiple projects on one invoice. That’s a deal-breaker for me since I’m regularly working on a couple projects at a time from a supplier.
If it supported that, I would switch to it. Right now, I’m using iRatchet instead. It’s a very good app, but I like Billings’ UI better.
That true Chris. I think they are bringing this in hopefully. You have to hack your way with Billings at times, especially when it comes to creation dates of invoices etc. But lovely UI.
After looking at OmniPlan ($150), I then tried the Merlin2 (145e) demo, limited to 40 entries. Slick and powerful with limitations but nice OS X integration.
I built my own stand alone app with EE after reading a post about a custom build that got me thinking. Its pretty basic where i can add a client, and attach job entries to each client using relationships, track time per job, date due, include a small brief and update status etc… I’m pretty much a one man band so i found basecamp and tick etc a little over my needs.
I only deal with around 30 active tasks at any given time, and around 5-15 clients at any specific time, so its ok for my needs.
Plus, i find when you build something yourself, you use it a lot more. All in all, it took me a day to build and my account person just logs in and sees a list of jobs to bill when she comes in once a week.
