I am doing a site in portugese language and installed the language pack. my site uses utf8. I uploaded all files with my ftp client “fetch” and choose not “translate ISO character”. So I presume that the language pack did not get screwed up. But now all the accents of portugese get scrambled to look like this

2    Blogger API     Blogger API Module     --    No Instalado    Instalar
3    Comentrio     Sistema de comentrios de usurios     1.0    Instalado    Remover
4    Email     Mdulo de Email
do Usurio     --    No Instalado    Instalar
5    Emoticon     Mdulo Emoticon
(carinhas)     1.0    Instalado    Remover
6    Image Gallery     Image Gallery Module

what shall I do. My mysql database is set to use utf8 too with colate utf8.

when I look at the db it looks like

exp_actions                               19    MyISAM    latin1_swedish_ci    2.6 KB    -

exp_captcha                               0    MyISAM    latin1_swedish_ci    1.0 KB    -

exp_categories                               3    MyISAM    latin1_swedish_ci

saying colate latin1_swedish

where do I have to change something to make it work?

Look into the language pack, are the accents and characters OK there? It’s clearly an encoding problem with the languagepack.

Dear Ingmar
Yes, even right after dowload to my mac via Safari the language pack, if looked at in a text editor is all scrambled? Does this happen during the download?
What can I do?

Dear Support Staff
Actually I tried EVERYTHING and I came to the conclusion that the portugese language pack IS already scrambled on YOUR server. Whatever means I choose to download it it would not arrive with the character set legible on my computer.
I open any file on my Mac, OS X, downoading it with any browser….it arrives with all accented characters scrambled.

Could please please somebody look into this.

Thank you
Pierre

I just downloaded it and the file appears to be fine.  OS X 10.4.8, Safari 2.0.4, using the default archive handler (BOMArchiveHelper).  What application (and version) are you using to decompress the zip file?  You might also try creating a new user on your machine, logging in with that user, and download and unzip it there.

dear derek

Now look at this. If I sit on my PC in the office and go to the link
http://pmachine.com/ee/knowledgeblog/language_packs

I get ANOTHER page with a portugese language folder translated by fabio sampaio.
If I go for the same link with Safari
i get a page with a portugese_brazil language pack translated by Rafael Fischman????

If I install the PORTUGESE language pack and choose it in the setting nothing happens.

Any suggestions
Pierre

Where are you getting that link from? That’s not even a valid page, which is why it’s bringing up the multi-entry Knowledge Blog.  The language packs are here: http://www.pmachine.com/ee/language_packs/ and I only see the Brazilian Portuguese by Rafael Fischmann.  Are you just changing the default site language and not changing your own language preference in your My Account section?  The site has a default language used for guests, but logged in members each have their own settings.

Yeah..I must have “fallen” on the pmachine language pack page..

Anyway, I tried to download the right language pack in portuguese on a PC. But even there it all is shown scambled. I use Pagespinner or textedit to look at the files. On the PC I use Notepad.

I really see no way for me to get the language pack?
Any suggestions?

I have emailed you the language pack that I downloaded and checked myself.  I cannot think of why yours would not successfully display on multiple computers, especially the Mac, as they pretty much handle unicode universally.  Hopefully receiving it via email will allow you to use it.

I think before perhaps you were on this page, which are the language packs for pMachine Pro?

Dear Derek
thank you a lot for your help. I tried it all.
Uploaded it directly and decompressing the zipfile on the server. My login looks like this

login picture

and it even crashes EE. If I login it does not work. I have to first delete de faulty language pack to continue.

Email me FTP and SuperAdmin control panel access to your site if you like, Pierre, I’ll take a look at it in the morning and see what’s going on.  The only thing I can think of at this point would be an ISP-level virus filter / firewall that is examining and perhaps altering the file en route to your desktop.  If possible, I’ll upload the language pack from my machine and hopefully get it working for you.

Interesting; the file is being transferred correctly, and most characters display correctly.  The ones that do not are puzzling.  I suspect that they will need to be converted to numeric entities to work.  As far as why they would show up in your own text editors incorrectly is another puzzle and I’m afraid does nothing but confuse matters.  I’m sorry that I was not able to help you; I would suggest that you contact the language pack author to see if he has an updated version.  That particular language pack is missing many key files, as it was created for ExpressionEngine 1.2.1, so much work would be need to be done on it to give you everything you need.

You are certainly welcome to translate the English into a working Portuguese pack and submitting it to the language pack library, as I’m sure others could benefit from an accurate and complete translation as well.

Dear Derek
For my own 5 minutes of fame I am really considering translating your language pack. Just give me a hint how I should do that.
Also, Is there any form of remuneration?

I contacted Rafael Fischman, who unfortunately started working with open source tools (brazil being a poor country with a week currency grin, which make EE an expensive solution).

But…depending on the amount of work I could translate it.

Also..I saw that there is no more portuguese version for download.

We decided that old language packs that were no longer being updated didn’t serve a very useful purpose for our users, so we removed all of them that had not been updated since ExpressionEngine 1.4.  To create your own translation, you can use the Translation Utility.  The language packs are all voluntarily translated and submitted and not an officially maintained resource performed by contract for hire, so no, there is no compensation other than the gratitude of like-lingual users, name recognition, and a link back to your site.
