is there a way to have posts that only members can see, but also have posts that non members can see - all on the same blog? Rather than creating 2 seperate blogs.  If it were a post that only a member would be able to see it would say something like - “you must be logged in to read this post.”

does something like this exist and i just haven’t seen it yet?

Have a look at this wiki entry - at the end you’ll see two links, the second link has many methods of doing this including status or category.  That should get you going. =)
