Personal/Family Site w/Gallery?

Hi there.

I’m a long-time PostNuke user and just stumbled upon EE and am really digging what I’m seeing.  My 2 big feature needs are a Gallery and a Forum, which it seems EE handles nicely.  I’m used to having to scrounge for different solutions that can be loosely integrated (hacked) into playing nicely with PN, though that’s seldom the case.  As a result, I’m more than willing to pay for a well-designed, fully integrated system, and EE has my attention.

My question:  Do any of you have, or know of, a nice personal/family/organization EE site that includes a “typical” photo gallery?  I’ve looked through the various sites showcased here and haven’t been able to find your average gallery organized by a few categories, each that includes several albums, to where I can just browse through photos to get a feel for how EE’s gallery works.

Any site tips would be greatly appreciated!  smile

For an example of what I’m looking to EE to do for me, see my PN example using Coppermine at http://www.clickworld.net

The gallery is highly templated so you can do pretty much whatever you want, so with some work you could come pretty close to the coppermine gallery.  I have a gallery on my site but I’m not sure if that is what you’re after, really.  Have you looked through the updated sites as well as the featured sites? You might like to try the gallery on the hosted demo.

Thanks for the reply, Lisa.  I’ve spent a couple of hours pouring through various sites listed in both areas and just haven’t seen quite what I’m looking for, but that doesn’t discourage me from moving forward.  I was just curious of anyone had anything similar that perhaps I missed or wasn’t listed.

FYI, the demo site seems to have a snag in the gallery portion, so I was unable to really “play” with that one.

Cool site you have, btw.

Hi JeffClick,

I actually do that with a personal site of mine. However, I recently took down the gallery so I could redo them with the beautiful templates from StopDesign. So my family gallery is down at the moment. But, bottom line, you can do just about anything with the templates.

The coolest thing about photoblogging with EE is that as of 1.4 you can setup a relationship field between your weblog and your gallery. So I can upload a whole series of images to my EE gallery. Then I pick one image from the upload and reference it from a drop down in my EE weblog. This automatically creates a relationship (link, and db association) between the gallery entry and my weblog entry about the same. Then, from the weblog publish interface, I create a Discussion Forum entry for my community (mostly family and friends) to discuss the entry, share their own photos, etc… So now my weblog entry has direct associations with a forum post and a gallery entry. And I can control access to all the above using one unifying membership system. I love how its all tightly associated. And yes, I loved it before I started working for pmachine.

OK, hearing that, followed by seeing Bowman’s own galleries, makes me sick.  The same kind of sick an “average” woman must feel when she says seeing a Victoria’s Secret model makes her sick.  Airbrushed, I tell ya!  Bowman’s Gallery has had plastic surgery! wink

OK, so in a nutshell, I presume you’re having to totally hack his template to work with EE since he’s an MT type?

I’d love to help beta your new site, if you’re looking for participants.  What you described sounds fab…

Well, I’m not trying to replicate all the functionality, so much as use the design. So mostly I don’t even look at the MT templates he has. Instead, I start with the html and js and work backwards. Also, I should note that this is not an official pMachine project. I took on this project to keep my skills sharp and to give me something productive to do in my free time. So pMachine is not releasing this or anything. Though I’ll certainly make whatever I cobble together available to the community under the same license that Bowman is using.

And yes, Doug makes me sick. Its a frighteningly beautiful design. Though, to get it to work in MT requires a boat-load of plugins and hacks, etc… I’m trying to make the EE implementation stick to just EE, with maybe some Query Module magic to round things out. But no EE hacks. It might take me awhile since this is a free time and not work project. And right now, work is dominating my free time! lol. Anyway, I was just trying to show that you can really stretch things with the gallery templates, tight system integration etc… The more you like getting your hands dirty, the better and better EE becomes.

Glad to hear someone else is working on porting the StopDesign templates grin I have started playing with it, too, but just as with Leslie, this is a back-burner project.

I agree. I discovered them a while ago and thought they looked great.

The design is very cool, but the funny part is that they have to use more than 15 plugins to run a gallery with MT ; - )
