Hosting: Textdrive or pMachine

I’m planning to move my EE-run site to a more “techie” host. I’ll likely go with either pMachine or TextDrive. Secure back-up, speed, and uptime are the important criteria. Any opinions?

TextDrive is very nice, I haven’t had much exp with the other but they have pretty positive reviews.

My site, as well as the wiki, is hosted on pMachineHosting.  They’re absolutely fantastic and Nevin knows more about his field than anyone I’ve ever spoken to.  I would go with pMH any day. =)

I am sure they are comparable in quality.  Note that PMH will come with EE preinstalled.

Edited to add that you can get hosting and application support from the same team of people.  I would say PMH is the way to go.

Only the demo is preinstalled. Or do you mean that if you hold a license, PMH installs the software? Is that true?

Yeah I guess it is a demo.  Maybe if you bought a license first they would just install a regular version.  You can email PHM support about this first.  Otherwise I think the demo is a simple upgrade to the full version.  Not sure though because I have not looked into it.  In any case the support is great and what better hosting provider to host your EE app than the creators of that app?

If you purchase ExpressionEngine during signup (for a 20% discount off of retail price), EE will be installed up to the point that you run the install.php script.  The EE demo can be requested to be installed during signup if you don’t purchase EE.  Yes, the only thing that needs to be done if you decided to buy EE and upgrade a demo is to overwrite the directory of files outlined in the EE manual, no work you did in the demo is lost.  Always feel free to use the pMachineHosting.com Contact Us form or write sales at pmachine hosting.com as the support forums in here are for software support, hosting questions and support are handled directly with our hosting staff.

Oooh, I forgot about the discount!  Yet another great reason to go with PMH.

Is this forum also hosted by PMH?

It’s very slow sometimes or is it just me?

Yes the forum is hosting by PMH, of course.

I’ve never noticed any speed issues.  Next time you do have one you should do a traceroute and see where the problem is.

pMHosting is great. I use DSL in Hawaii and the pM Forums get here quickly, sometimes faster than local sites.

pMachine.com is actually on its own server, so if Rick/Paul/etc. do anything with code behind the scenes, database work, etc. (just as this site was the first beta test site for the forums before public availability as an example) that could also affect site performance, and would only affect pmachine.com.  Just as an FYI.

PS:  Also keep in mind that if you do a traceroute to any domain on our servers you will never reach beyond the edge of our network as our intrusion prevention systems and firewalls both block traceroute and pings for a few security reasons.

OK, fair enough…

I am based in Holland. Maybe that makes a difference???

I get a time-out once I do a trace-route on pmachinehosting.com… and ping doesn’t work!

Have you read what Nevin wrote? That’s on purpose.

See my last note in this thread:

PS:  Also keep in mind that if you do a traceroute to any domain on our servers you will never reach beyond the edge of our network as our intrusion prevention systems and firewalls both block traceroute and pings for a few security reasons.

As far as from Holland, the data center provider we use has high speed direct connections to both London and two different Amsterdam exchange points (places that major ISPs share connections) and have not had any reported speed issues from our European hosting clients.

We have hosting clients that host with us worldwide and we even have a client in Belgium that uses our servers to run an “intranet” application of sorts for communications between their 4 different office locations.  Similar setups for companies that have offices in Europe/US and even Europe/US and Asia offices.  So unsure why you would have slow access to the forums here.
