You have the ability to add smileys. Which are the same thing as emoticons.

Oh please let there be a way to keep the current publish/edit pages the same—while I love having things organized, I already know this is going to involve significant retraining and headaches for our clients if we upgrade their installations. They’ve learned one process: fill out the page. Now they have to add a bunch of extra clicks and look for things they’re supposed to do. If you understand the process, the new setup is fine. If you’re just looking to post new content because you’re a product manager or a marketing person, the new system is intimidating. Really intimidating.

Also, you might not believe it, but having icons instead of words makes interfaces much, much harder for people to use. “File Upload” is easy—looking for a tiny icon to click to upload a file, especially if I’m not a tech-type person—is hard. It took me a while to find the file upload utility. We will have to train clients to click on the plus sign to open, say, extended— or maybe we’ll be able to set the default to always open? (that preview/save/fast save/file upload box is the least elegant section in the new interface)

The only thing that is “broken” on the current publish/edit pages in that it’s hard for people to make a popup/embedded image combo. Hope this is fixed—couldn’t test it in the new control panel.

I think the new control panel interface looks pretty good myself. I’m just groaning about all the retraining I will have to do and really hope I won’t have to!

The spellcheck is a wondrous thing—looking forward to that!

Nope, unless Rick/Paul have changed something in the last beta build I haven’t finished loading yet.
There is a solution (discussed somewhere here), create a Stand Alone Entry, include what you want and they won’t have to deal with the CP at all. That’s my route anyway :-)

Fixed (also discussed somewhere here) :-)

I’ll live with the new layout as long as an updated 31Three theme is included.  I have enough plastic/metal quasigradients on my screen already.  :P

though I’ll admit I’m not a fan of the “template_bits” ‘skinning’ system

If you think about how dynamic every square inch of a forum is you’ll understand that there’s really no other choice than to separate each dynamic component into its own template.  The only other alternative is to build pages in which raw PHP (or whatever scripting language you use) is interwoven within the HTML itself.  This approach would make it extremely difficult to skin.  I just don’t know how else we could have done it to make it easier.

Also, I don’t understand this at all.  I see no difference between forums and weblogs, other than how often they’re updated. {exp:weblog:entries}, {exp:forum:posts}—what the heck’s the difference?

I mean, if there’s a reason the forums (and membership stuff, by the way) should use push templating while the rest of EE uses pull, I’d love to understand it.  But because it’s somehow “more dynamic?”  Either I don’t get it or I don’t buy it.

Smileys can, and often are, animated.  They are the same exact thing.  You can use whatever images you want for the smileys. =)

Awesome!  I love it.  I, too, am curious about the Publish page. My first reaction was “Oh, I don’t know about this….” but, I could see it’s practical purposes.  Many of the set-ups we create for our clients really bank on all the information being readily available in a global view.  But, I’ll reserve my final judgement for when I actually use it.  You never know! smile

Thanks for all you do guys!

The 1.3 sneak peek shows a lot of promise, which is what I’ve come to expect from Rick and his team. grin

Not that I want to put any pressure on the pMachine team or anything, but the 4th of July is coming up, and I’m really looking forward to some EE 1.3 fireworks. Think there’s a chance I’ll be a happy fool on the fourth?

The only thing that is broken on the current publish/edit pages in that its hard for people to make a popup/embedded image combo. Hope this is fixedcouldnt test it in the new control panel.

I agree!!! Clients always bugging me about photo uploads being such a hassle, really hping this one works. Someone mentioned no preview on templates not there? I hope its there, we use that all the time.
If these two aren’t done well, can’t/won’t recommend my clients to upgrade, but I’m sure they will be. As is I am getting to the point of offering clients a third party photo handler to have easy use and popups, waiting to see.

Yes, it’s been reworked…there is a description with screen shot somewhere in one of these 1.3 threads.

Are you referring to the “View” link for each template for viewing the rendered template? If so, that’s still there.

Image popups are much easier to use now. I agree they were a pain with 1.2.1, but Rick & Co. have done a great job reworking this in 1.3.

I’m not sure why they said there’s no preview on templates. There’s a huge button that says “View Rendered Template” on every single one.
