An unfeature request because there are features in EE that I’d like to see removed - either removed and abandoned entirely or split out into 1st party add-ons that could still be had but would require downloading and installing separately. The goal would be to decrease the size & complexity of “out of the box EE” which would help ease some of the pain of updating a EE2 site.
Some of these features just feel like carryovers from EE’s blogging past and no longer necessary as default inclusions for a “business class” CMS:
Modules:
Updated Sites (Ping servers are dead, how many people want to create one?)
Wiki (Have used once over EE’s lifespan, and that was for myself)
Referrer (Duplicates functionality provided by web host or Google Analytics)
Emoticon (Doesn’t seem like a good fit for EE’s professional CMS image)
IP to Nation (maybe, depends on if people use it for spam prevention. For use in displaying country flags by blog comments it’s not a core requirement)
Other:
Admin > Content Admin > Ping Servers (the other half of Updated Sites, I think the whole “Pinging” thing was cool in 2002 - 2004 and pointless since).
I agree with this, it would be good to see usage stats across a range of users, but these modules seem to be very unused. If they can be installed separately by what might be a very very small portion of users, it would benefit the whole to have a smaller EE package.
I’d agree as you know. Didn’t think about the IP to Nation. I would humbly suggest mailing list manager too, when MailChimp have a free account I think it makes more sense. Although understand some people want everything integrated.
I deliberated over the Mailing List, but have used it with a few clients who thought they wanted to get into email marketing. It can provide a no-cost easy way to try it out.
Yeah, I’ve just found that MailChimp’s free account allowance is more than ample for a starter mailing list along with the nice templates, analytics etc that come with it.
I’d argue that unless you have tracking within the mailing list, it’s not very measurable?
True - but my concern was that unless clients actually sent out emails then there’s nothing to track..
It’s like “we want a blog!”
“But, then, you’ll have to blog regularly.”
“Oh.”
I like to see clients get out a few emails first to go through the process of gathering and writing that content before getting too involved with the analytics, etc. Start simple, build on success kind of thing.
Agree with all of the above items listed for removal. I haven’t used any of them. Mailing list on the other hand has been useful for a few clients (although without tracking of some sort MailChimp, Campaign Monitor, etc. are better options).
I agree, I’d happy to see some of this pulled out the main download, but I still use the wiki so I’d want that available as an extra like the discussion forum.
Disagree with Wiki. I need and use that and i have some projects thats are “in hold” because of the lack of the module features. Still, i need it and our site needs it badly.
Mike thinks not outside the box, not inside the box, but in-between the box
I’ve only ever use Referrers on one site, and Wiki once on another which turned out to be not powerful enough so they want for one of those OS solutions instead.
Relegating these to 1st party addons (and therefore optional) would reduce the initial payload a bit, and trimming the fat is always a good thing for staying fit!
I would agree with that one only if there were an easier way to add a theme in post-install. Right now - like it or not - the Agile Records theme is the only way to a newcomer to install EE with *something* to poke around in and get an understanding of the system.
Agreed Mike, for newbies some example files are a good idea, but agile is a bit complex, very special and of limited use, and the whole theme is 3 MB with images 2,8 MB. Maybe something lightweight and more generic would be more help?
Whoo…I had some (limited) involvement in the Agile theme development process years ago. What you get implemented as the theme now is only a fraction of the entire Agile Records site as created/envisioned. The challenge is to give enough of a default install to show enough of EE to communicate it’s value/worth. It’s not an easy nut to crack - especially when you start to factor in member area themes, etc.
But I do wonder how much of that is images and how much of those could be whittled down using the Image Manipulations.
I agree with some like Updated Sites and Referrers, but IP2Nation is a lifesaver when dealing with international sites and for instance e-commerce - taxes or not taxes etc. You can do a lot more with it than display flags
