I know that when I create a new blog I have the option of creating a new set of templates for it…. however, lets say the blog is already created and I want to change the template group associated with it. Is this possible?

Of course.  Templates and Weblogs have no real innate connection.  It’s all done via the templates.  Depending on your template you could either change an assigned variable at the top (ie master_weblog_name) or find all instances of weblog= and change them to weblog=shortname of your new weblog.

No, I don’t.  Personally?  I’d create another custom field and assign that to the weblog, and see if it helps.  Trying with tagnames that are different than what you have, obviously, since duplicating them can cause issues.
