Is there an easy way to make the Search Hilite work for searchs from within the weblog? ie: a search that uses Expression Engines own search. Reason I ask is that I have made a drugs compendium for a hospital intranet site using categories of drugs to display entries. I need pharmacists, doctors and nurses to be able to find their search terms, usually a drug name, quickly on a page that will have many drug names.

When I first wrote the Search Hilite plugin the Search Module was not yet completed enough for me to do this with it.  However, it is possible now with some extra code added to it.  Should be quick enough…I’ll let you know.

<cough>  If you find someone to take care of everything on my to do list, then of course you can have it tomorrow morning.  We’ll see what I can pull out of my hat, probably should go buy a hat first (or new tech toys) but whatever.

Tim, a new version of this plugin is finished with this ability (and a few others) added in.  Check the Plugins site in a few minutes.

I hate to start a new thread for this, so I’ll ask my question here and hope it gets seen. smile

First off, I LOVE this plugin.  Many of my visitors are from Google and I fear they get lost in the jumble of crap on my site. smile

Now to the issue.. it seems for Google at least, when a person does a search with quotes, things get messed up….

Here’s an easy way to test this out…

Do a google search for gustatory rhinitis with NO quotes.  I should be around the 3rd listing: So Very Posh - Gustatory Rhinitis  Everything looks as it should.  Joy and beauty fill the world.

Now do a google search for “gustatory rhinitis” - this time WITH quotes.  I should still be around the 3rd listing (there are two entries there, but only the first one pointing to /x/blog/entries/gustatory_rhinitis/  is correct.

This time angels weep as the whole entire entry is gobbled up and the search words turn into: http://www, google, com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=“gustatory, rhinitis”&btnG=Search.

Thoughts? Suggestions?  Hate mail for revealing a problem? smile

Someone, way back, mentioned this as a problem and I was unable to duplicate it with some testing.  It did not help that my dev site is not indexed by Google, of course.  Thanks for providing a real world example, I will see if I can discover what exactly is causing the problem.

Lynda -  I just uploaded Search Hilite 1.2 with what I believe is a fix for this problem.  Try downloading it and replacing it on your site.

ah-nope.  Doesn’t fix the problem.

If you want I can give you access to my plugin directory via FTP so you can test the results for yourself (since you said you don’t have anything on your dev side to test with)  Let me know if that would help any.

Thanks for looking into this.

Of course, I downloaded the version after you indicated to, but it still says 1.1, so I’m not 100% positive it’s the new version.

I just downloaded it from the plugins side and it says 1.2 on it.  Perhaps I best just send you the file myself.

Thanks Paul - the file you sent seemed to work.  The one on the plugins site says to download 1.2, but when you go into it, the version is still 1.1

There was a weird caching issue once going on with the language packs, which was the same thing.  The file was updated but the download was incorrect.  What became really odd is that we deleted the file off of the server and it still downloaded the language pack as if it was there.  Odd…Nevin, says there is no caching on the server, so I wonder if the browser is caching it?

It might be.  I hate caching and have ZERO space allotted for it, but things seem to cache anyway sometimes.
