See this new entry in the Knowledge-Blog.

Basically, you’re running out of memory allocated to PHP.  According to the message you only have 4MB allocated, which is very small.  Default PHP installations allocate 8MB, which is typically sufficient for EE.

You’re running pM Free, not EE.

Ah, well… that, too. [grin]  However, the error does still indicate that you’re running out of memory allocated to PHP.  You should really have a minimum of 8MB.

Contact your Host or server admin.  That setting is controlled on the server side and is not normally something that a hosted user will have access to.

I have nearly the same error message when I try to open the control panel index.php:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 16896 bytes) in /mnt/ja2/01/795/00000000/htdocs/dritter/pm/lib/encoded.email.php on line 48

This looks to me, as if the 8MB my Server allocates for PHP are also not enough?!? My Provider Strato (one of the biggest and most inflexible in Europe) says, they won’t allocate more than that to my webspace package. What can I do? Do I have to go to another provider? Unfortunately I just bought a specific Domain for my Weblog @ Strato and payed the fee for one year today. I have an alternative provider who says they allocate 15 MB for PHP. But how much memory does pMachine really need? Is 15 enough? You should contain this information in you requirements for pMachine here: http://www.pmachine.com/expressionengine/requirements.php

You’re running pMachine, not ExpressionEngine.  Just FYI since you posted to an EE forum.

You can see this entry in the Knowledge-Blog for information on possible ways you might increase your memory allowance or, failing that, disable some features in pMachine that you don’t use in order to reduce your memory requirements.
