I’m looking for a system which will provide:

A client login function where there is the ability to view a calendar and download files.
A news section.

The calendar and files would need to be updated via admin and client accounts created.

Is this possible with EE or only with extensive tinkering etc.

Creating members only content hidden behind a login is a matter of configuring a member group then assigning view privileges to that group at the template level.

All very straightforward.

You can upload files to a downloads weblog, and set permissions on the template that displays the weblog (and hence the file download links) content - but file access priviledges won’t extend to the file system. In other words if someone logged in they could copy the link to download the file and email that off to a non-logged in person.

There are some third-party tools to further restrict/obfuscate the download links if need be.

In a nutshell mfos, you can do all that and more.
