We’ve set up a suite of sites on multi-site manager. I have several people, logging in under the same username and password, uploading content as I develop the sites. I’ve now run into a serious problem:

I can’t login to some of the sites. I enter my info and it just refreshes without logging me in. Everyone that was previously uploading content seems to be running into the same issue. We’re launching Tuesday, so we need to figure out the problem before then.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Brad

To start - are you able to login to one site and then switch Sites?

Also, what version and build are you on?

Hey Lisa,

I am able to login through another of the websites and switch domains to access the others. The problem with that is you are not able to upload images through the Upload File (in the entry) when accessing a site from another domain admin.

Build 20080421 v 1.6.3

Ok, the first thing to do is update to the latest build, including re-uploading your MSM files after you do the normal update.

After you’ve done that, go into each Site that you’re having trouble with, and let me know what it says for both Admin -> System Preferences -> Security and Session Preferences, Admin Session and User Session Type; and also for Admin -> System Preferences -> Cookie Preferences - all three boxes.

Thanks!

When I update the EE install, do I need to update the multi-site manager as well?

You should keep them current, yes. There actually is a new version of the MSM, so we recommend you use that when updating to the latest build.

Ok, we’re now running EE 1.6.4 and MSM 1.1. Everything went smoothly.

For: Admin -> System Preferences -> Security and Session Preferences, Admin Session and User Session Type

  - Control Panel Session Type: Cookies and session ID
  - User Session Type: Cookies only

Hmm, the note under “allow multiple log-ins from a single account is set to yes, and says, “Note: If your Session Type above is set to “Cookies Only” this feature will not work.” Is that part of my problem? What does it need to be set to?

For: Admin -> System Preferences -> Cookie Settings

  - Cookie Domain, Cookie Path and Cookie Prefix are all blank. I’ve never even seen this page. Do I need to plug stuff in?

Thanks for your help guys,
Brad

Ok, so I went ahead and started tweaking the settings and I think I’ve got it mostly worked out.

I’ve changed both Control Panel Session Type and User Session Type to “Session ID only”.

This fixed the login issue. There’s still one issue remaining. I can access each of the sites from the “Sites” tab at the top. However, if I’m in the main site, where the EE install lives, when clicking the name of another site under the “Sites” tab, it doesn’t take me to those sites.

Any thoughts?

You say you are on EE 1.6.4, are you on the latest build as well? I vaguely recall an issue with one of the earlier builds.

Paramore, I can replicate the problem you’re having if I login to the main MSM site, and try to change sites. But only if I am logged in using the /system URL. If I use the /admin.php route, I can change sites from the main one.

Can you put a copy of admin.php into the root of your site, and try logging in that way instead?
