We never got it to work with that user. I have tried doing everything I can. We still get the error message when we do a search on that particular member. Did you see a post that adressed this that I missed? Thanks!
Is it possible to recreate the user this was happening to?
Hey Sue, I am sure I could but then we would lose this members previous posts. Which they just happen to be one of the best and most respected posters on that forum. There are a ton of great posts and I dont want to lose that data. Albeit it’s not helping not being able to search his name any longer.
Sorry for my delay, no updates or resolution for me. I have noticed it with a few more members so it’s not isolated to the 1 member I had originally thought. I cannot figure out any correlation between the members either.
Dang- I still think it has to be something server side. I’m tempted to have you do a test install and see if it still borks with that user(s) on a fresh/stock install. I expect it probably would. But let me bump the crew a bit more.
Oh- and to confirm- did you ask the host about mod_security measures and whether they have any in place? Wasn’t dead sure if they’d gotten back to you on that one.

Argh- apologies, this one slipped by me. I’d give them an example url, let them know it’s throwing a 500 and ask if they have any mod_security restrictions that may be in play. That should give them enough to go on.
Hey Robin, well I received a response from the host and not sure it’s going to help much but here it is…
I was unable to find any PHP or Apache settings which would cause inconsistent
errors with your forums search. I also ran a mysqlcheck—auto-repair on your
MySQL database just in case there was corruption there, but that fixed nothing.
At this point I’m inclined to believe that there is a bug with ExpressionEngine,
or possible just some utility from its administrative interface you’ll need to
run to correct the problem. However, please ask if
there’s any server settings you’d need us to check or if you have help with
anything else.

Can you head to Admin -> Utilities -> PHP Info and do a find in page for mod_security, please?
Also, do you have access to the server error logs? Those often give us a lot of information on the vague error 500s; and that could be a huge step in determining what is actually happening here.

No, I do not have access to the server error logs but I can probably get from the host if need be. They have looked at them previously but said it does not show any details on the cause.
The problem that we’re having here is that Error 500s are very, very vague. They can be almost anything. If you can get the error logs, perhaps we can spot something the host didn’t. It’s worth a shot.
One common cause of Error 500s can be .htaccess, since it’s a very “low level” file. Do you have a .htaccess, and if so, what are the contents?
