This question may be related to a resolved thread.

Hello,

Now that I am able to see my forum, I am unable to see changes to my forum’s settings. I switched the default template to “blue” (before creating the forum) and it is still purple. I removed the default “My Forum” and added two of my own categories and forums. None of these changes are displaying when I view the forum at http://127.0.0.1:8080/index.php?/forums/

Screen shots of the forum management page and the forum page are attached. The second screen shot will be in my next post because the “Attach files to this post…” link does nothing when I click on it after submiting the first screen shot and previewing the post.

Thank you,
Frank Petroski

Frank, if you look at the bottom of your second screen shot, you’re using the Default theme.

Try switching it to Blue from the bottom of the page. While you may set a particular default theme, you have cookies set for the Default theme.

Hmmm.. what I would suggest is rename your forum_themes folder and reupload the original templates.

See if going back to the default templates fixes the problems you’re having.

Tried both of those suggestions and nothing has changed. I’ve been playing around some more as well including removing the forum module and reinstalling it. No luck. Any other ideas?

Which version/build of EE are you using? You can find that out at the bottom of any control panel page.

I can see which build of the forum from your screen shots.

I am running ExpressionEngine 1.6.4 - © Copyright 2003 - 2008 - EllisLab, Inc. - Build:  20080710.

I am working on getting the files for build 20080808 but figured a build less than one month old should still be working. If not, when/if we get to having the software in production, we will run into issues anytime a new build is released and we do not immediately upgrade.

Thanks

As long as you have two versions that match up. The forum wasn’t updated for the Olympics build (20080808).

It’s hard to tell what could be wrong on a localhost version of an install.

Did you uninstall and reinstall the forum after you reuploaded the theme files?

Thanks. That makes sense about the builds.

I did do a reinstall and it had no affect.

Hello again,

We need to be able to pilot this software working by next week or we need to go a different direction. I need your assistance in closing out this trouble ticket.

I have been uninstalling and re-installing trying to figure out what is going wrong.

I just did a complete uninstall of Build 20080710 and installed Build 20080808 from scratch. I then installed the forum module again. During the initial setup in forum management, before I made my first visit to the forum, I made a few minor changes to the default install. For example, I changed “My Forum” to “First Forum”. When I opened the forum for the first time, the changes were there. I then went back and made another small change, renaming it to “First Forum Test”. When I went to view the forum this time, my changes were not there.

The obvious first thought is caching - which I thought on all of the previous install attempts. I cleared my cache and nothing changed. My next thought was to try it remotely to see what it looked like from a different machine. Same result. I was still seeing “First Forum”. What was different this time around, though, was that remotely the images and style sheets were not getting picked up.

I had seen this issue twice before and it is another issue that concerns me. The first time I saw the issue when with my first successful installation. I was able to view the site’s images and style sheets fine from the server and my (remote) machine. However, when sharing the site with another user, they were unable to get the styles and images to load (first time they had opened the link). After my next uninstall / reinstall, that user was then able to see the site the same as me. Now this issue seems to have re-surfaced.

I am attaching screenshots of the local view with the images and style sheets as well as the remote view without them. My two issues now are the following:

1. Why do the images and style sheets sometimes not appear and how do I prevent that going forward?
2. Why do none of my changes to a forum get picked up after the initial install of the forum module?

Now two weeks into trying to get Expression Engine successfully installed and running, these have become urgent issues for being able to use the product with our business.

Thank you,
Frank Petroski

Hi, PrecisionIR - sorry about the delay in response to your post.  I’ll work with you on this throughout today and try to get this up and running.  Can you do a quick test for me?

Go to Templates and make a new template, call it anything. In that template simply put:

Hello World

nothing else.  Now visit it.  It should say Hello World.

If you then go back and change it to World, Hello!

and visit the template does it update?

I’m trying to identify if there is some sort of server-side caching that may be interfering here, so keeping it really simple.

Thank you!

Can you also do some other testing, to check another possible issue.

Can you try to upload an image, and make sure you can view it, as well as another user?  I want to focus on this:

However, when sharing the site with another user, they were unable to get the styles and images to load (first time they had opened the link).

and make sure there isn’t something else going on that may have nothing to do with EE.

If that does work; please over-write the image with the same file-name and a different image, and then see if that updates for everyone.

Let us know, thank you!

Sorry I was unable to reply to you yesterday. At 5:50 PM (EST) on a Friday, our workday is usually over. It was too late to start a thread yesterday.

I did log into work today though and am hoping we can work together today even though it is a Saturday. I have your answers for you.

I went through several template creating exercises. In all of them, I was able to view the original template I created but I was never able to view any changes to the template.

For the image test, I uploaded an image named test.jpg. I was able to view it locally and remotely. I then replaced test.jpg with a different image of the same name. I was able to see the new image locally and remotely.

I agree that it sounds like a server-side caching issue but it seems to be specific to EE, not the server itself. One other thing to note is that I have other PHP code running on the same website and I have not had any caching issues there. Is there a specific caching setting within EE that we might be missing?

Thanks,
Frank
