I recently attempted to upgrade EE 1.6.3 to 1.6.4 and may have incorrectly performed the procedure. Currently, our members only forum is missing threads and the members are displeased. I did back the entire site up before attempting the upgrade but but don’t know which folders and files are associated with the forum module. I called our web host thinking maybe they could restore the files to a time before I attempted the upgrade but they are not currently performing daily backups. Can you please explain to me which which folders and files are associated that I need to upload back to the server and what if any pros, cons and issues I may encounter.

-Thank you in advance.

Did you upload the latest copies of both EE and the forum?  There really isn’t much if anything done to EE proper’s db in that particular upgrade.  I suspect the data may not be missing from the db.  What version of the forum were you running prior to the upgrade?  And do you know the title of a thread that isn’t showing?  We could query the db directly, see if it’s still in there.

Also- shifting to ‘Installation’ as this appears to be an upgrade issue.

No I did not upload both EE and Forum copies to the server. The instructions to upgrade explicitly stated to upgrade EE before upgrading the forum.

I am currently running forum version 2.1 which I am assuming is the most current forum version and does not need to be upgraded, correct? I recently renewed our license with EE and with that wanted to perform the most current upgrade to EE.

I would like to upgrade from EE 1.6.3 to 1.6.4.

I do have a question with performing the upgrade:

Do the installation files need to be uploaded to the sites root or (as I did it which created the forum problem) change the ‘system’ folder name in the 1.6.4 upgrade to the name ‘USASys’ which is the system folder name on our server. I did upload this. I noticed this was not correct because I received errors for not being able to upload those files. I cannot save definitely that the members noticed a problem with lost forum threads after this but I suspect.

Here’s what one of our members emailed me:

Forum homepage shows no post past 1st wk of july.Shows newer post when I click on a section such as “General discussion” .
New post under thread “turkey hunt” don’t show except under “thread review” when posting a reply.
Under rules & regs, last week showed no post. This wk, goes back to Trips post, click on it ,get error message” Not authorized”.
Member list is full of links to porn sites along w/ other questionable sites & has been for a while.
Seems we get one problem fixed (pics) & another shows up. Wonder what it will be like IF we get to be one of those forums w/ 2k+ post a day.???

After you upgrade EE core, you’ll likely want to upload the latest build of the forum.  I’m not dead sure what build you’re currently running- you can look at the forum changelog in your download to see- but it is likely a build or so back.

Now- you rolled things back to 1.6.3- correct?  Is the forum currently showing everything?  Or is still missing threads/etc. in certain views?  An upgrade from 1.6.24->1.6.4 shouldn’t have affected the forum db at all.  But I want to be sure that what you have now is correct.

When you upgrade- you’ll load the contents of the new system folder into the (renamed) system folder on your live site- being sure NOT to overwrite config.php or any third party additions you want to keep.  Pretty much just take it step by step according to the docs.  You won’t need to upload the install.php at all.

Let’s see where the above gets us.  BUT- this assumes that the current database is ok- and that things are showing properly.  If not- we’d need to dig into why things aren’t showing like they should.

FYI-I am also getting a warning in expression engine that reads:

Warning: Your installation file is still on your server.
For security purposes, please remove the file called install.php from your server using your FTP program.

What file is this? I noticed this after attempting the upgrade.

__________________________________________________________________

The current build of forum I am running is: 2.1.0
The current build for EE is: 1.6.3

The upgrade did not take when I uploaded the files as specified in the docs.

I believe that I did roll back the core files to 1.6.3. I immediately noticed when I originally performed the upgrade by instruction of the doc that it turned the EE control panel completely white and could not access it.

yea, I did not do anything to the forum DB and it was working fine to my knowledge before performing the upgrade. Do you recommend re-uploading the saved forum files (I need to know what they are) back to the server?

Ok, disregard the first part about the install.php file needing to be deleted. I did that. Is there anything you were able to find about my other questions? Thank you in advance.

OK, let’s take a step back here. Your site is running, but your forum is giving you trouble? Which exact version and build are you running in both cases? The forum, bascially, consists of three files (mcp.forum.php, mod.forum.php and mod.forum_core.php) in the “forum” folder of the “module” subdirectory.

Thank you for your help smile

I am currently running EE 1.6.3 and forum 2.1. I’ve attempted to upgrade to EE 1.6.4 and that’s when I experienced problems with posts becoming missing. My module folder is located in ../sys/module/forum

I followed the instructions for installing the upgrade, except it was not clear if I was to rename the system folder to whatever my system folder is named, which in my case it is (renamed). I did change the folder name then uploaded the files to the server minus config.php & path.php.

mod note- best to keep your system folder name private.

Everything displays ok now- no missing posts, etc?  If so- first upgrade the base EE.

Make sure you have a good backup of the database.  Then you need to replace the files in your current system folder (which you’ve renamed) with the new files from the download.  Do not replace config.php, config_bk.php or the core folder.  The docs give detailed instructions on what needs to be replaced.  Triple check that config.php is writable- typically chmod 666.

Then- run the update.  Once it tells you EE has been successfully update, you can update the forum.  Check the docs- it’s basically a matter of replacing the files with fresh copies and then visiting the forum control panel via ‘Modules- Discussion Forum’.  At that point, everything should be running the latest version and build.

Make sense?
