Hi,

A number of people have forwarded me comment notification emails that have their own name at the top instead of the name of the person who made the comment.

i.e. in this section:

“_______ just responded to the entry you subscribed to…”

I noticed someone had this problem years ago but there was no answer.
http://expressionengine.com/forums/viewthread/4217/

It’s obviously only happening in a tiny number of cases - I’ve seen 3 out of hundreds of comments.

Has anyone seen this before? As far as I know it’s only happened on one of the many expression engine sites I’ve built.

Ben

Greetings,

Which version/build of EE are you using?

As in that thread, I come to the same conclusion Rick did; checking the code, it’s using the commenter’s name - the same variable used to insert the information into the database, so unless it’s getting that wrong, too, I do not see how this would be happening.  What are the contents of both your admin and user comment notification email templates?

I don’t believe I’ve edited either of these templates. As I say, they’re working 99% of the time.

Have you noticed if this is occurring when a registered member comments, or when a guest comments?

Ah very good question, I hadn’t noticed but that is true: the three comments sent to me are all comments by members that are being sent to guests.

I think I would have had a lot more complaints if that happened every time, however. I’ll try to hunt some cases where it didn’t happen.

Took a bit of tracking through older versions, but a couple years ago, {name} became deprecated.  If you go to edit your notification templates, you’ll notice that it’s not listed as an available variable anymore:

{name_of_commenter}
{name_of_recipient}
{weblog_name}
{entry_title}
{comment_url}
{comment}
{notification_removal_url}
{site_name}
{site_url}
{comment_id}

But for legacy reasons, parsing of {name} was left in the code, but is indeed the recipient, not the commenter.

So the solution is simply to change {name} to one of the above specific variables, depending on which context you want, the recipient, or the commenter.  I apologize that this wasn’t documented.
