What kind of traffic can EE handle?

I’m currently in the process of going through options for the redesign and re-programming of a rather high traffic website.  I was curious, what are some of the larger traffic EE sites out there?  Given a rather well designed setup (we’re not talking complicated, just a huge volume of visitors), can EE handle 100-200k uniques a day without dragging the mysql/apache server to its knees?

Other solutions are leaner (Symfony, CI, custom coding it) but EE affords most, if not all, of the features they desire out of the gate which frees my time up for popping in the stuff they deem “v2.”

Hi there,

I had a similar question this week, and was able to find a forum posting that addressed some of my scalability questions:

Hope that’s helpful.

Thanks Jess for helping out in the Pre-sales forum. The information covered in that thread, especially from Nevin (CTO of EngineHosting), is a good reference. In terms of real-world examples, iLounge would be a good one. Their numbers are significant, especially during Apple events.

Here are a few other examples:

BMI.com
gov.ca.gov/
firstlady.ca.gov
paidcontent.org
oukosher.org
frieze.com/magazine

Quick question regarding current release vs. 2.0.  How much different is the 2.0 database compared to the 1.6x database?

All the info regarding 2.0 is in the Sneak preview. The answer to your question simply isn’t available yet since 2.0 is in active development.

OK, one more question.  Since EE2 is being written in CI, will most of it be modular?  In other words, if we have a license, will we be able to port out certain modules into an existing CI project?  For instance, can we plug in the user module to our CI apps or is integration really only available the other way around?

Hi wlvrn,

As I mentioned, all the public information currently available is in the Sneak Preview. Until there is a beta we won’t be discussing the specifics of what is possible (or not) with 2.0. We’ll announce the beta on the EE blog. At that point I’m sure there will be a lot of discussion in terms of development possibilities between CI and EE.
