What the title says really.

For some reason EE doesn’t gzip stylesheet templates, which can make a big difference on high-traffic sites.

The fact that they’re served up by EE without a CSS filename extension also means that an .htaccess directive can’t be used instead (if I’m wrong about this, please, someone correct me).

Thanks,
Stephen

How about putting your CSS as standalone file instead of inside EE templates. (it’s much better/faster)

Hey Victor,

How about putting your CSS as standalone file instead of inside EE templates. (it’s much better/faster)

I typically do that, but then have to faff about with .htaccess gzip directives to get it all working. It just seems like a strange omission in EE, hence the FR.

Cheers,
Stephen

It would seem that not all servers have GZip enabled; my server (freeBSD) does not. The techs have told me that it can contribute to the unreliability/instability of the server in certain circumstances. Not being a tech, I didn’t push it further

Obviously, EE (or Apache, for that matter) will only Gzip content if 1) the server supports it and 2) the client indicates that he can deal with such content. That’s not the issue at stake, though.
