It’s been awhile since our last news update on ExpressionEngine 2.0, so I thought I’d take a brief moment and share with you an early draft of the File Manager area of the new control panel.  As usual, this comes with the usual disclaimers about it being a work in progress, that some features you see now might change dramatically between now and release, etc.  So enjoy the brief screencast giving a quick rundown of some new interaction and capabilities that the File Manager in ExpressionEngine 2.0 will bring.

As a side note, when you hear me say “my drawings” in the video, I mean my drawings file upload location.  The actual drawings are the work of one Cliff Persaud, who gave us fun likenesses of each of us for our new staff pages.

Hm, the link http://expressionengine.com/ee2_sneak_preview/file_manager_preview/ seems to bring me to the same page as http://expressionengine.com/ee2_sneak_preview/

Impressive. I’d love to see how the file manager interacts with the Publish form.

Looks very, very nice.  It really embraces the notion that web apps and desktop apps should work the same (or at least feel similar).  Rock on!

Looks great! I hope it will populate automatically with files already uploaded to the designated folder. I’m converting a site to EE with plenty of files already placed online via ftp. It would be good to see EE easily incorporate those files into the file manager interface.

I’m also interested to see how well the file manager integrates with the publish form - especially with images uploaded and resized for posts.

FTP’d files will show up, deepsurface, if they match the allowed types of files for that file upload location.

That’s great. Sounds like I can get rid of my PDF folder and just put let EE organize things for me. I’m definitely looking forward to the 2.0 release.

Very cool!  I’d love to see EllisLab tackle bulk uploading of files.

Add me to those who are interested in how the file manager will integrate with the publish form.  Right now I’m using TinyMCE and it’s associated File Manager.

One minor question: will there be some sort of (AJAX-ified) pagination/searching/ordering for file directories that contain lots of files? It’s not uncommon for the directories on my sites to contain hundreds of files.

It looks great! I, too am interested in multiple file uploading.

I was wondering if you guys were thinking about both physical and logical file filtering. Didn’t see how to create new physical folders in the demo, although I am sure you can. Saw a button about options that intrigues.

Creating logical filters (example: I want to see only .pdf & .doc files) that could be applied in multiple to any physical folder would also be quite handy. I know that we saw some of this, but I can’t tell whether this is folder centric option or the filter could be flexibly applied and removed on the fly like option boxes in the sidebar. Would definitely prefer the latter.

Works fine in Vista for me, so perhaps try another media app, or Quicktime itself, The Linguist?

I bet this has been thought of, I’m just hoping that it will be easy to pull files into weblog entries.
