I’m trying to understand how to use categories, in particular what EE tags apply and how these EE tags can be used.

So far I’ve found the documentation to be quite disparate.

There appears to be information in one place regarding the use of categories to filter the list of entries.
Other information on categories displayed as a list.
Other information on displaying categories related to entries
Other information on displaying categories as a header

All of this took a lot of dredging up. I found that I had to search each support area to find the information.

Is there a comprehensive description on the use of categories, their various applications and examples that show their use?  With regard to examples I’m looking for more than the short snippets of code that are shown in several places, rather I’d like to see the context in which the code is used.

The initial things I’m trying to accomplish are:
Verifying that an entry has the categories I think it has. This is just confidence building since I’m new to EE.
Being able to show on an entry which categories have been applied to it
Being able to create a list of categories.

While there are various explanations in the support area of the some of the above, I’m sometimes left with the thought ....” and how did they arrive at that?” More explanations would be helpful.

Any pointers on resources would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

The docs have a chapter on the weblog module that has all the important category info.
As for how to use them, that is really up to you and only limited by your imagination and skill level.
Check out Boyink’s tutorial series for some practical use of categories.
